3.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAR 1, 2008 I didnít detect much of an aroma upon pouring this beer. The beer itself is a dark red, with a nice head and good lacing. Can detect the alcohol slightly in the finish, but it balances nicely with the malt flavors. This is one that I have cellered some, and will re-rate when I open them up. (Re-rate) There is now a slightly sweet aroma to the beer. Coloration and carbonation appear to be about the same. The beer has seemed to gain more of a roasted flavor. Not bad at all.

Draft sampler at The BeerHive in Pittsburgh. A nutty taste throughout with hints of spice. A nice winter warmer.

Pour is deep ruby red, transparent, with a tan head and fair bit of lacing. Nose is salty and meaty. A bit of berry and malt sweetness, slightly oxidized in back. Taste is more sweet, tinge of alcohol, faint herbal hop. Seems a hint sugary with some brown sugar and caramel lingering. Medium body, soft carbonation, a hint slick.

Great winter seasonal beer. Rare find in NJ. Pour from 12 ounce bottle to a pint. Pour very dark amber with thin white head. Malty and boozy but in a good way. Enjoy if Troeg Mad Elf is out of stock

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
P: Pours a ruby cola appearance with a vast community of floating specks. A small short lives bone colored head that fizzles down to a lizard skin cap.
S: Right away cherry NyQuil floods the nose. Dark fruits create a sweet sticky aroma, holiday fig pudding, dank grains, clove, hints of star anise and cola.
T/M: Lots of spice up front, roasted grains, astringent cherry booze, slight oxidation, dark fruit and bitter pears show up toward the finish. I also get some bubblegum, pomegranate, white grapes and under ripe persimmons that create that buttering chalky bite. Body is medium and a tad on the thin side with velvety carbonation. Once warmed the finish is similar to a box of crayons.
O: A great old ale in a six pack. I love that this isnít a pricey bomber and its well executed. Tons of figgy goodness with cherries, booze and spice. A nice holiday treat.

On draught somewhere. No real memory of the beer other than a rating. Must have been decent?

Bottle. Ugly dark amber with sediment. Toffee and candy notes. Tastes like a barley wine.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/8/2013. Pours moderately cloudy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, plum, brown sugar, toast, biscuit, brown bread, pepper, herbal, floral, light chocolate, light roast, and herbal earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, brown sugar, brown bread, pepper, herbal, floral, light chocolate, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, brown bread, brown sugar, raisin, plum, pepper, herbal, floral, light chocolate, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and earthy/spicy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly slick, bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice old ale style. Good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and herbal/spicy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Aroma of Christmas pudding and cereal, some dark fruit, brown sugar, taste is pretty similar, nice but like Anchorís Our Special Ale, can only have one or two at a sitting, not made to be a session ale.

2013 bottle. Cola looking pour, yeast Pleasant malt driven aromas and flavors. Dark fruit, raisin, cola, roasted nuts, coffee, clove and spices. Mouthfeel is lighter then I expected.. Watery, medium body.. with soft, creamy carbonation. Nice lingering finish of the above mentioned flavors. Very Belgian Dubbel-esque. A good go-to value winter beer.
