Dry stout from this Boulder-based brewery, with pale yellowish beige, creamy, medium thick head, slowly diminishing in the middle and leaving small dots of lacing on the edge of the glass; very dark, hazy chestnut brown robe with burgundy hue, black in general appearance but in fact still translucent if you look closely. Aroma is heavily dominated by umami elements: strong gravy, beef stock cubes and broth, over more subtle elements like coffee grounds, leather, bayleaf, old black chocolate, blackcurrant, fig, black olive, coffee cream. Soft sweetishness in the onset, subtle dried banana and dried fig, immediately overcome by the umami factor, very meaty and beefy, gravy-like, with the expected undercurrent of roasted barley sourishness accompanying it; carbo is soft, resulting in a ’moelleux’, fatty and oily body, gliding thickly but smoothly over the tongue and leaving behind a deeply nutty and toasted maltiness which develops into coffeeish roasted bitterness in the end, supported by the promised dosis of peppery, herbal hop bitterness, bit resinous even. Spicy and malty finish, roasted bitterness filling the back of the mouth, but some of the nutty sweetishness remains behind too along with a notable, late, more delicate coffee-like aspect. Decent and enjoyable stout, nice thick body in spite of having ’only’ 6.3% ABV, but heavily tilted towards the umami side which I think will not please anyone. I liked it.

Versa nel bicchiere di colore nero corvino, impenetrabile; bella anche la schiuma color nocciola, compatta e dalla buona persistenza. L’aroma si accende forte, con orzo tostato, caffè tostato e note di cioccolato amaro; seguite da aromi seducenti di buccia d’arancia, frutti di bosco e liquirizia. Intricato, complesso profilo palatale. che attesta di volta in volta, cacao, caffè espresso, sapori di malto caramellato e resinosi, quasi di pino. Assertivo amaro da luppolo e cereali tostati, ma mantiene un equilibrio elegante. C’è una forte componente di alcool sotto il mélange di sapori. Si tratta di una birra piuttosto complessa, ricca di sapori e cremosa; che incarna lo stile delle Stout americane.

12 oz. bottle. Pitch black, with a medium, beige head. Cocoa, anise, molasses, and burnt toast. Sweet and malty up front, with a smooth, significantly bitterness that follows. Medium body, syrupy, a bit acerbic, and clingy through the finish. This is a solid, very roasty stout. A little harsh and sticky, but flavorful and thick.

On tap at the brewery October 2014. Pours a dark brown with ruby hue and large beige head that lasts. The aroma is roast, toffee, and chocolate. Light body, roast, grain, velvet finish, very good.

sample from bottle, poured a darker brown to black colour with a light tanned head. nose of sweet roasted malts, ash, dark dried red fruits, coffee, and light sweet chocolate. taste is sweet upfront, leading to a dry ashy aftertaste.

Pours black color with a small beige head. Aroma is very roasty and malty, some oat notes, dry bready and hoppy. Flavor is somewhat thick with malts and bread, cocoa notes, hop bitterness and faint vanilla. Bitter palate, almost creamy with its thickness. Very pleasant low abv (within Avery scale) brew.

BOD 327/15. Pitch black pour. Normal head volume, outstanding lacing and retention.
Very good nose of light chocolate, roast, malt with a caramel note, a bit of char and an odd berry like fruitiness. Had it had more intensity, it would rate outstanding.
Medium body that is very smooth and has a light creamy aspect, especially on the finish. Outstanding carbonation / body balance with just enough middle effervescence to open it up and still deliver a light prickly finish.
The flavor profile is hard to rate due to the strong berry flavor (raspberry and blue berry) since the description has no mention of these additives. However, what’s in the glass is outstanding, albeit lacking a bit of intensity. It begins with light roast then flows to bakers chocolate. The middle has slightly sweet underpinnings that a light herbal hop note cascades over. Bitterness is very mild and has some hop flavor but is mostly roast with a bit of char. From the middle on fruit takes center stage and coasts through the finish over a bit of char with a nice herbal hop note.

12 oz. bottle from Pacific Liquor. Strong dark coffee and dark chocolate aromas, with a hint of sweet malt and cream. A black pour with a minimal khaki head that leaves lacing. Has a dry feel in the mouth but packs plenty of flavor, including a slight sour tang. Well balanced sweet and bitter with chocolatey goodness and coffee bite. Full body, creamy and oily texture, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. This is very flavorful and interesting for a beer at 6.3% abv.

Black roast y.sweet berry. Herbal hop components. Malty chocolate roast with dark berry and a tang dry finish. Nice.
