Head is dark tan and has some nice staying power while leaving a bit of lace on the way down. Nose is a nice roasted bean thing. Quite nice really. Flavor is extremely robust and full. Great smoky qualities to it. Meaty, hearty. Just thick but smooth. Feel has a good carbonation to it and the liquid is good too. Overall this is a very nice dry stout. My first sip ended up killing half of the pint. HopheadHans (755), Bay Area, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Feb 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours with a dark color and a huge frothy head. This could be one of my favorite everyday stouts. Full mouhfeel without being heavy, nice roasted aromas and flavors, strong coffee notes and a nice hoppy finish. Great. fredandboboflo (1404), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 1, 2008 Updated: May 14, 2009Bottle. Nice aroma of dark malt blended with citrusy hops. Lots of coffee, some pretty sweet chocolate. Flavor as forewarned is predominantly coffee, just a tad of bitterness from the hops, but the hops stick around in a roasty aftertaste. Mouthfeel isn’t overwhelming, but I wouldn’t call it light either. Only real problem, reflected in the overall score, is that it doesn’t really hold up as it warms, but if you drink it quick, quite tasty. 8-4-7-4-13/3.6
Rerate 5/14/09 Bottle. Aroma of coffee, roasted/burnt malt, hint of dark chocolate and accompanying berries. Flavor again filled with coffee, very bitter, black coffee, as well as the intense roast. Indeed very dry. Not much change really from my first impression, just being a bit OCD tweaking my numbers. GJF (492), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 28, 2008 12 oz bottle poured in a pint glass. Pours a nice black beer with a two finger, rocky tan head. Great lace work on the head. The aroma is surprisingly light, a bit of coffee to it. The flavor is quite roasted with a burnt coffee quality. I like the roastiness but the body does not quite fill it out. It’s a bit thin and the aftertaste is a little harsh. It’s definitely drinkable but not stellar. FlyingSwine (169), Littleton, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 24, 2008 Hard pour results in a black beer with a massive head. Light aroma chocolate and coffee. Heavly roasted malt gives a tobacco (Skoal Straight) flavor. I don’t find the "mountain of hops" that is advertised, but that’s okay in my book. Palate is a thin, and finishes a bit dry for my tastes. Overall a good stout, but not my favorite. SHIG (2023), Aviano, Italy
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 12, 2008 Bottle: Poured thick smoldering black with a light tan color creamy head. Aroma has a smokey roasted smell to it. Taste is deep rich coffee and roasted malts, finishes dry with nice tingles. wickedpete (626), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 5, 2008 Pours black and produces a medium tan head. The aroma is smoky, has some coffee, and a bit of sourness. The body and flavor is quite light. Has some coffee and cola going on. Very nice and pleasant all around. jlthiering (47), Viginia Beach, Maryland, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 5, 2008 Great tasting, light stout. Aroma was almost "funky", but the taste more than makes up. Not nearly as good as Chicory Stout, but good nonetheless.
