surffisher (194), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Oct 12, 2007 Pours very dark brown with garnet highlights and a thin tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts with a big waft of piney hops on the pour. Lots of hops in the flavor profile too, giving it a fresh flavor that counterbalances the roasty characteristics nicely. Well-balanced bitterness with a very smooth finish. Pretty full bodied with moderate carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. For an everyday type of stout, this is exceptional. Big flavor relative to its small ABV. rlgk (3377), Vårgårda, Sweden Oct 4, 2007 (Stockholm Beer Festival 2007) Bottle. Dark amber color, nice offwhite head. Roasted malt aroma with chocolate and cocoa. Roasted chocolate flavor, quite bitter grassy. Long bitter tar finish. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden Sep 27, 2007 (Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 22 Sep 2007) Black colour with frothy, pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with sweetish coffee and milk chocolate. Roasted, malty taste with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and generous amounts of coffee bitterness in the finish. Some sweetness in the aroma, but dry taste. Medium body. Very nice balance, loads of taste considering the medium abv level. BuckeyeBoy (1645), Boise, Idaho, USA Sep 22, 2007 12oz Bottle pours out a almost black topped with a light tan head. Aroma of coffee and a little smoke. Nice rost and a bitter kick as well. Pretty good stout. Thanks indiana red IndianaRed (1553), Boise, Idaho, USA Sep 22, 2007 Bottle pours a deep black with a large full tan head. Some chocolate malts in the aroma as well as a little porter-like sourness and roatsted notes. Flavor is more burnt charred campfire. Some hop bitterness but not much of its flavor. Fairly thin bodied but for a DS its about right. Smokey bitter at the end and a modest carbonation.
Dry stouts are not big on my list but this is a good one.
TechMyst (166), Fox River Grove, Illinois, USA Sep 21, 2007 This begins my foray back into stouts from IPAs. Drank one; then I had a "session" of the remaining 5. [Note: This is NOT a SESSION brew, I do not care what anyone says or thinks.] Rich chocolate/nut aroma. Spotty sheen of tan head. Even a vigorus pour does not yield a lasting head. Very opaque black, transmitted color is a deep amber with ruby tints. Slick and slightly chalky/resinous palate. Superglue lacing. Stout up front, straight porter in middle and aftertaste. Each phase is plesant. Definitely NOT one-dimentional. Even my emitted noxious gas was plesant tasting. Soft conditioning, made me feel fuller than mouthfeel. Drinkable fast or slow, but if you start slamming you’ll soon go to sipping. Almost perfect, except for palate being a little chalky. If you like Guinness, step up to this stout tough guy! Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA Sep 19, 2007 12oz bottle-A dark black body with an off white head and an aroma of coffee, chocolate, and maybe some small vanilla. Taste of the same with a small amount of smokiness. Nice stout. RSRIZZO (1345), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Sep 16, 2007 Had this beer on 10/23/1998. Color is a deep black with low carbonation and a light head. Aroma is rich with the scent of roasted malts, its almost a sweet smell. Taste is deep rich and roasted. it starts with rich and yet crisp body and right here you can already taste the roasted flavors coming though. It goes down easy as the flavors come to life in your mouth and throat. Finish is as full of flavor as a beer can get with rich roasted malt flavors and an even bitterness.
