lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA Jun 22, 2007 Pours fizzy black with medium mocha head. Aroma of chocolate and almost nutty maltiness. Flavor is predominately chocolate with a good amount of roastiness. Very flavorful for a 5.1%. Nice dry finish. Another good one from Avery. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA Jun 21, 2007 Pours black with a thin dense light tan head. Light cocoa and roast aromas, maybe a hint of licorice. Light on the palate. A good deal of roast in the taste, with a some mild cocoa notes. Nice dry roasty finish. Very drinkable and tasty. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Jun 17, 2007 Pours black with garnet highlights and a rocky, tan head that laces nicely. The nose is of molasses, chocolate and roasted malts. The mouthfeel is medium/full-bodied, tacky, and lively with a roasted bitter finish. The flavor is molasses, light chocolate, and roasted malts with a dry, bitter roasted finish. I was hoping for a bit more of the chocolate flavor to come through, but it’s quite tasty nevertheless. This is one of my favorite dry stouts. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 16, 2007 Updated: Dec 29, 2007Bottle. Opaque black with a medium-sized, rocky head that lasts. Aroma is chocolate, lemon grass, and smoke. Flavor is a nice combination of all the same. The use of more lemon-grassy hop flavors in this stout is most welcome, providing a great balance to the strong roasted barley flavors. Too many stouts are so dominated by roasted barley that you may as well drink coffee instead. This one is refreshingly more hop-balanced. Palate is medium-to-full bodied, smooth and not overly dry. FrankJohansen (3329), Sabro, Denmark Jun 16, 2007 Bottle. Black colour with a huge rocky light brown head. Rich aroma and taste of roasted malts, cofee and chocolate. Semi dry finish. Softly carbonated. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA Jun 12, 2007 Almost black pour with a big tan head. Aroma is of coffee, malts, cocoa. Flavor is sort of metallic malts, roast, coffee and bitter chocolates. Body is a tad thin but still an overall decent stout. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 9, 2007 12 oz. bottle - jet black with almost no head upon pouring; sweet malty aromas that drinks smooth w/ a bitter aftertaste ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 7, 2007 Appearance: Pours dark chestnut brown with some faint reddish hues around the edges. Sturdy tan head settles slowly with sporadic lacing throughout.
Smell: Full of French Roast coffee and rich carob. Handful of black walnuts. Boiled sugar. Also, there’s a vague, but noticeable blueberry fruitiness.
Taste: Gah! The bitter, roasted flavors border on tasting unpleasantly ’burnt’; its like charcoal, and I find it thoroughly contemptable. Don’t look for sweetness in the flavor, for you will find none.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin, though some ashy qualities keep it from going down smooth. The finish overshoots past simply being dry and ends up considerably coarse.
Drinkability: Well, I suppose. "But," I’d quickly retort, "There’s a vast world of superior stouts out there to be had."
