Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Feb 13, 2007 On tap at the Happy Gnome. Black in color with a lasting layer of brown film. Aromas mainly of black olives, brown sugar and a mild-roast, thin coffee. Flavors are initially of stout’s lesser characteristics – sarsaparilla or cola with prunes. The very dry, almost plastickey body eventually discovers a more cinnamon-chocolate identity. So, make sure to let it warm quite a bit. conor23 (110), Elgin, Illinois, USA Feb 12, 2007 Roasted malt aroma, dark black color. Burnt, bitter flavor, overpowers the maltyness. Very rich but a little bitter for my taste. gwpom (246), Akron, New York, USA Feb 9, 2007 12 oz bottle. Noticed last reviewer said there was a frothy head. I didn’t get that at all... indeed very little head to speak of. The aroma was deep chocolate, which followed with the robust taste. The first taste was full of the alcohol, but second swallow mellowed nicely, definitely chocolate and roasted coffee. Very nice stout indeed. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Feb 5, 2007 12-oz. bottle. Pours black with a huge frothy dark brown head, mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, burnt, nutty), light hops (celery), average yeast (leather) with notes of tar and vanilla. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation and a chalky finish. Long duration, light sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness; heavy roasted malt flavor with tar, molasses and dark chocolate. kmweaver (2398), Sebastopol, California, USA Jan 31, 2007 12oz bottle, courtesy of Crosling. Thanks, Nick! Pours a dark black center with brown edges; medium tan head with patchy lacing. Light, chewy aroma: marshmallow, vanilla, and hints of milk chocolate. Medium mouthfeel: toasty vanilla, roasted malts, and creamy milk chocolate; citrus hops peeking through; not a lot of complexity, but very drinkable and well-roasted. Dry, milk chocolate finish. AskForJenny (627), Ontario, New York, USA Jan 29, 2007 12oz - Brown liquid with thin, limp tan head, no nose, noearly no carbonation. Smoke and tobacco notes. A second bottle was the same. I’ll stick with the Storm King or Frostbite. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 25, 2007 Bottle from crosling. Black as can be with strong black bitter coffee aroma. Acually looks like black coffee. Tan head with good lacing. The taste was of strong bitter coffee with slight fizzy carbonation. Good body for a stout but just too bitter for me. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA Jan 25, 2007 Pours dark brown/black, with a medium sized brownish head. Aroma is chocolate, cofee, and a slight sweet malt presence. The flavor is medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Slight hints of a floral hoppiness is totally overun by the roasted malt and chocolate and toffee. A decent offering, but definately not great
