Black with a finger of tan head, smells like burnt coffee. Thin mouthfeel which tingles the tongue, with the smell, tastes burnt. Leaving nice lacing on glass, with chocolate notes arriving. Quite bitter. ehhdayton (1113), USA Sep 14, 2006 Aroma is of coffee and chocolate. The color is a nice black with a decent tan head. Pleasent coffee roastedness and dark chocolate flavors dominate. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Sep 9, 2006 Bottle. Black with firm brown head. Dry aroma of hops, grass, black coffee and dark chocolate. Dry flavour of espresso, burnt malts and grassy hops. Bitter aftertaste of coffee and dark chocolate Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA Sep 6, 2006 Pours a black color with a medium brown head. Strong with the roasted malts and coffee aroma with chocolate, toffee, and molasses. I agree with most people that this beer seems watery. Plenty of roasted malts with coffee and chocolate. Flavor doesn’t linger as long as most stouts do. It’s ok but I’ll go for different stouts before buying this brew again. SunSkates (47), Arkansas, USA Sep 3, 2006 I was surprised to be dissappointed in this beer; usually a big fan of Avery’s beer. Milky metallic aroma with a lot of nuttiness and light roasted aromas. Flavor/mouthfeel was watery and weak. Noticed charcoal and some cheap coffee sourness. MrBunn (1521), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 1, 2006 I don’t think I’ve ever seen a head like this on a stout. I’m looking at one finger of dark, dark liquid, the rest of the glass is tan foam. As it slowly is dying back so I can complete the pour, I’m picking up aromas of nuts and chalk. A touch of roasted malt in the background. As the head is still fading and the temperature is warming the aroma is shifting a bit to a more fruity offering and the lacin gon the side of the glass is fairly impressive. (In spite of the new direction that the aroma has taken, it is still fairly faint and unidimensional.) When I decided I didn’t want to wait anymore I had half liquid, half foamy head. Flavor is a little bit like gritty coffee with a capuchino head that leaves a nice mustache. It definitely has a very strong espresso characteristic that is much more bitter than I expected from the aromas. It blends nicely but is obviously not as powerful as many of the high octane offerings in the stout category at only 5% ABV. It comes off as a little watery, too. That said, I really enjoyed the sharp coffee flavoring. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 26, 2006 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear black colored body with a little light passing thru the edges. The head was dark brown, creamy, and left nice lacing. Aroma is more chocolaty than roasty with a dry chalkiness. Some burnt malt as well. Lighter notes of coffee and dark fruits. Flavor is dominated by roastiness up front but quickly gets overtaken by a very dry and lightly astringent hoppy finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly oily texture. Carbonation is active but fine and soft. A little astringent late in the finish. One of the better Avery beers, full flavored and lots of character.
