kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Mar 17, 2006 12 oz bottle: Deep brown w/a short lived light tan head, fairly opaque. A bit burnt roasty aromas at first w/ some light chocolate and toasted malt aromas. Very faint herbal hop in the nose. Lightly nutty and has a milky lactic quality. Citrusy hop aroma really comes out as it warms Well balanced w/a dry finsh and an herbal hop aftertaste. Lightly harsh in the bitterness in the aftertaste from the dark grains as it is lightly burnt. A hint of nuttyness, but the toasty malt gets muted by the burnt flavor. Medium body, a bit dry borderline astringent m/f, low carb. Not a bad stout, but just a bit too burnt in the flavor for my taste buds. malachi (62), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 14, 2006 Thin, black/brown pour with little to no head. Chocolate, hoppy aroma joins a malty flavor up front. Slight fruitiness in the body with some bitterness that drops off quickly into a long, subtly dry-oak finish. Pretty good. boto (1319), Granby, Connecticut, USA Mar 9, 2006 12oz. bottle: There was pretty much no head at all on my sample. The beer pours a very dark brown color. The main component of the nose is chocolate malts, with a fair amount of sweetness in there also. There is also some coffee notes. The taste is a good mix of chocolate malts, with some roastiness and coffee flavors. A bit of the sweetness comes through also. Nice! WhiteSoxFan (152), USA Mar 8, 2006 Updated: Aug 31, 2006Re-rate on 8/1/06 - bottle from Morgan’s. App. - Fairly thick, dark, viscous pour. Black. Barely any light shines through. Big, creamy, rocky 2" tan head. Drops very slowly and sticks around a long time. Decent lacing. Aroma - pretty decent sized and complex aroma - Roasted malts, some chocolate, and some maltiness. Flavor - avg. up front bitterness, not too high. Really nicely balanced in the middle. A lot of flavor - some roastiness, a little bit of chocolate, and just a little bit of coffee - tiny bit of a hop character in there too. Very smooth throughout. Palate - solid medium moving towards full body. Avg. to lower carb. Really smooth and easy to drink. Overall - great stout. Really easy drinking and not assaulting on any front. Excellent head. Good aroma. Great flavor. If anything I like a little more coffee flavor. Definitely a favorite. (Original rating from 3/06) - Cask at Falling Rock. Dark brown / black with creamy brown head that left nice lacing. Very easy drinking out of the cask. I had to pace myself as this could’ve gone down quickly. Served not too cold, perfect. Nice roasty flavor with a good amount of bitterness, but balanced toward the malty side. Creamy, medium-full mouthfeel. Great stout. A treat to have it on cask, but I need to pick some up in the bottle as well. tsp (113), Denmark Mar 6, 2006 (Bottle) Pours completely black with medium sized light brown head. Nice lacings. Head reveals notes of hops, heavy burnt coffee and herbs of some kind. Taste is cramy, yet dry, with dominant notes of liquorice, hops and burnt malts. Overall very nice.. :-) unibaren (145), 8000 Århus C, Denmark Mar 5, 2006 Dry, roasted (almost smoked) and hoppy aroma. Pitch black with light brown head, which dissapears fairly quickly leaving nive lacings. Not big bodied but coffe and hops flavours are very much there. The aftertaste is rather dry with som bitterness. Very balanced and nice! OldRaspy (292), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Feb 28, 2006 Poured from a 12oz bottle a dark brown with a very slight tan head. Had very light lacing. Aroma was coffee, dark chocolate, and raisins.
