Jet black pour with a mocha head. Big roasty aroma - chocolate, coffee, ash, charred wood. The flavor mirrors the nose, with hints of licorice. Very bitter finish.

Absolutely delicious. Unlike many other stouts, this one doesn’t have an overwhelming alcohol note to it. Just great malty, deep roasted flavor with a bit of coffee (not too much!) to complement the thick, smooth body. Great beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Ar: Roast, slight coffee, caramel - molasses.
Ap: Black and opaque - small tan head with low retention, leaves a thin ring of foam and a spotty pattern on top.
T: Roasted malt and caramel - clean alcohol warmth - coffee and brown sugar - coffee, toffee - some vanilla and oak notes - bitterness is medium and clean.
P: Medium body with high carbonation - finish is dry.
O: Nice stout - a good mix of dark malt and roasted caramel flavors with the right amount of backing sweetness and bitterness.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Smell of pitch black coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. Good-sized head, nice retention, great lacing. Pitch black color. Tastes dark and rich, very minimal sugar, nice bitterness, char-roast. Medium bodied; doesn’t over-power, but better to slowly savor than session. Nice follow-up to sesame kale in olive oil, before a smoked ham, lettuce, and tomato toasted sandwich.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolate, dried dark fruits and molasses. Taste is heavy roasted malts, leather and tobacco up front - somewhat different than the aroma. There’s a hoppy bitterness that really kicks in for the mid and the long finish. This one covers everything and is one of the better stouts I’ve had. It’s almost like a stout blended with a black IPA.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
I did open and pour this little on the warm side. Appearance is quite nice with a very long-lasting head and lots of fine lace. Aroma is Malt & toasted barley. This is kind of an odd one as the flavor is fairly bland for this stout and with a little medicinal character. Body is good. Like to try this one again a little colder.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This pours a dark brown/black color with a decent, foamy head. The aroma is filled with cocoa, coffee, and toasted malts. The flavor is well-balanced and smooth. It’s a stout that isn’t too heavy or too light. Smooth malts and cocoa are very evident. This finishes a with a bit of chalky, malt after taste.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Trasfer from BA review from 6-19-12 -
Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass
Appearance – Pours a black color with thin brown head. The head faded fast leaving almost no lacing.
Smell – The smell is a wonderful mix of dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Mixed with these aromas are lighter aromas of some hops as well as a light toasted nut aroma.
Taste – The taste begins with some of the chocolate detected in the nose. This is mixed with a roasted malt flavor. Together these two, with a light sweet flavor create the initial taste of roasty milk chocolate. As the taste advances however, the sweetness and some of the chocolate flavor begin to fade as tastes of espresso come to the tongue. The bitterness increases at the expense of the chocolate flavor as the taste moves to the end eventually finishing, when combined with a light nutty and more earthy hop flavor, to leave a roasted bitter flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The beer is just a little bit above average thickness with the carbonation level being just below average. The lower carbonation is very fitting as it is a beer that is made to coat the tongue. The body however could use a slight boost in chewiness to really accentuate the roasted flavors.
Overall – This is a pretty good stout. It has a very nice flavor profile as well as a very nice aroma. Only thing holding it back is the lack of an lacing (which really can be pardoned) as well as the somewhat too thin of a body. Overall though it is quite nice.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Tom L. Black with bubbly tan head. Cow dung that quickly changes to roasty aroma, then evolves to sunflower seeds saltiness and grain. Salty, grainy, rich taste. Smooth, very roasty finish and medium-bodied.
