The nose is of molasses, chocolate and roasted malts. The mouthfeel is medium/full-bodied, tacky, and lively with a roasted bitter finish. The flavor is molasses, light chocolate, and roasted malts with a dry, bitter roasted finish. I was hoping for a bit more of the chocolate flavor to come through, but it’s quite tasty nevertheless. This is one of my favorite dry stouts. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA

To me that was a little too roasty and dry, almost to the point of being burnt. Some licorice and some roasted chocolate and coffee notes, and again with this brewery, you have to add too much hops to everything. ditmier (1122), Boise, Idaho, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 19, 2008 Crushed with Jakebra. Roasty, coffee-e, some fruitiness in it somewhere. Interesting flavors in there, kinda yummy, but not as intense as just about every other Avery. 00cobraR (1103), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

The flavor had a super coffee flavor with a nice bitter finish. Again this is a wonderful brew. kenb (1101), Oregon, USA

Roasted coffe/chocolate aroma. Medium bodied. Strong wallop on the intial taste. Bitter coffee flavor. Finishes with a lingering bittersweet aftertaste, more bitter than sweet and loses it’s flavor in the dry finish. Less hop and more malt and alcolhol would improve this.
Well carbonated and just a tad too hoppy. Take away the black color and the aroma and this actually tastes more like an IPA than a stout. Will try it again.
