Brown bottle, 12 ounces, gift from Philippe Boutin, received on April 2 2008, savoured on April 5 2008; eye: black, opaque, tiny ring of beige head, some lacing; nose: fresh roasting, vanilla, chocolate milk, resinous hops, cocoa; mouth: fresh roasting, chocolate milk, vanilla, cocoa, resinous hops appears just prior to the finale, finale in fresh roasting with a good presence of vanilla, light acridness, light astringency, mildly bitter, lightly sweet, medium body, oily texture, average carbonation; overall: quite likable

Pour is dark brown black with a decent creamy watery ivory head and some little spotty lacing. Smell is roasted and sweet chalky malt. Flavor is sweet and malty too with no real roasted notes in there but perhaps some nuttiness in the finish. Mouthgeel is a bit high on carbonation and is just a touch too fizzy on the tongue for me.

Pours mostly black with some light getting through. Light, creamy tan head. Smell is creamy, roasty, and milky. Taste is roasty, lightly bitter up front with some lightly burnt toast notes, and finishes with some creaminess and a dry bitterness. Pretty nice flavor, good body and is not too thin or thick to keep it from having poor drinkability. Overall a very solid and enjoyable stout.

Jul 10, 2008 Very dark brown pour with a chestnut rim. Aroma is super dark roast and hints of hardwood and cedar. Flavor has a woody dryness to it. Not bad. This beer reminds me of wood burning kits one would play with as a kid.

Jul 9, 2008 While this beer is by no means a failure--it certainly struggles to deliver in flavor what it presents in appearance. Which is to say that I’m certainly not buying their description of "extreme" for this one, as it’s much closer to average.
