Deep dark brown with mocha head. Aroma is sweet, musty and bread. Taste is a little coffee followed by a little chocolate but also includes sweet roast nuts. Maybe almonds. Feels like a milk stout.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 OKplus (379) - Oklahoma, USA - APR 30, 2013
A - Close to black in color with some brown hued edges. 1 finger tan head. Nice lacing.
S - Coffee, a sugary chocolate, toasted almond, roasted grains.
T - Dry heavily roasted malt-almost burnt, smokey hops come through and add bitterness to the already harsh burnt malt. Some dairy sweetness is there in the middle. Finishes bitter and dry. The aftertaste has some baby aspirin in it.
M - Low carbonation, medium body.
The malts seem over roasted and the bitterness does not blend well. The flavor reminded me of charcoal water. Kind of harsh but I would drink another one.

On cask at Churchkey in D.C.
The beer is black with a small, broken head. The aroma offers some light roast and chocolate. Super smooth and easy drinking. Man, you’ve got to love a good cask ale...nothing like it. Light in body with a mild chocolate and roast character working together nicely. Also, a bit of bready malt and a hint of bitterness in the finish. Solid.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Scipio (490) - Palatine, Illinois, USA - MAR 7, 2013
Pours black with a good foamy tan head. Aroma consists of roasted malts, heavy coffee, a touch of chocolate and a bit of smoke. I guess you can call it musty overall. The taste is heavy in chocolate and smokiness. I still get some coffee, but not nearly as much as earlier. I do find hints of licorice in the flavor as well. This one is more light in body, with a creamy texture. Carbonation is flat. Smoky aftertaste lasts a long time. This is a good stout.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Elwood (2493) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - MAR 6, 2013
Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling. It pours black with soapy tan head. The nose is roasty with a slight vinous note, a touch of chocolate, and a little alcohol. The flavor has slight burnt notes with some coffee and a strong, bitter roasted note. Lasting finish. Medium to full bodied. Definitely full of flavor and well rounded. Very nice beer.
