4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 dzimm27 (64) - - DEC 3, 2011
Clean light hop aroma with a bit of bite that indicates this is a heavy bodied beer. Beautiful golden color with light carbonation. Taste is full, sweet, silky and some of that good Belgian yeasty funk. So smooth and clean, the alcohol is fairly hidden. A wonderful, wonderful beer. The description mentions The Reverend from Avery, which I have also had and loved. This might even beat that one. Probably up with Don de Dieu for one of my favorite Belgian Golden Ales at this point. Awesome.

Pour a orange hue with considerable head. The aromas are not yeast drivern but more eathy toned. Hits of nutmeg and fruit. The flavor of liquorish root, (thanks Pete) parsnips, and potato skins fill the palate. Not overly Belgian but I really enjoy the uniqueness of this beer. I expected more hops but they present themselves in a balanced and subtle way.

Aroma filled the room upon opening and pouring. Decent head retention and definite raw fruit salad aroma (apple, pear, grape, hint of banana) as well as some whiskyish aroma. Spicy flavor dominated by clove, biscuit, bread yeast, dried fruit. A hint of alcohol warmth on the tongue. A pretty rich beer all around with flavors that continued to evolve. Great label!

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2011 Pours, well for lack of better words, golden and clear with a decent, white, pillowy head with some lasting ability and nice lacing. Nose is pleasant, notes of orange peel (maybe citrus hops?), coriander, biscuits, yeast, peppery spicy undertones, and a light floral hop aroma. Flavor is great, fruity notes of pear and banana, biscuity and Belgian yeasty, and with great spicy notes including nutmeg and pepper. Bitterness is fairly low and the alcohol is well hidden. Palate is medium to light in body with carbonation being between lively and fizzy and the texture remarkably still being creamy. Finishes dry and slightly bitter after the sweetness fades. A surprisingly excellent Belgian beer from an American brewery. An excellent alternative to so many dark Belgian strongs out there, and quite refreshing to those who may not be a fan of the other types of Belgian beers.

Complex, balanced, lively, crisp taste and aroma. Yes you can whiff peach and apricott. I catch the nutmeg but not the cinnamon noted. Mercifully, not as much acidic sourness and yeasty taste as some beligans. Frothy off white head. Earthy somewhat bitter finish. Hildes the 9% alcohol.
