3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 whaleman (2175) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 24, 2003
UPDATED: SEP 11, 2005 Lazy, swirling carbonation, golden-copper color, and a small, loose head. Aroma of stone fruits, warm spices, yeast, and perfume. Assertive flavor of spice, fruit, and baked bread with an organic sweetness of honey and vanilla bean. Considerable depth; very nice and distinctive. Pleasantly surprising because I’ve had this beer in the past, but don’t seem to recall it being this good.

Nice golden color, good lacing and carbonation. Aroma is a little "thin". Peppery and spicy flavor, with plenty of fruit overtones as well. Not as complex as I was hoping, but a good Belgian ale.

Clean white, tight beaded head, splotchy lacing. Hazey orange color. Big, spicey, appley, citrus nose! sweet. Medium body with a somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Kinda soda poppy also? Citrusy, bready flavor. Nice hop presence. Finish is med/dry. The alc. also makes itself known. Avery makes some interesting brews.

#500!! Pours a rich amber color, slightly bronzed. Thin head and little lacing. Aromas of wheat, malt, some honey and citrus hops. Probably sweet orange peels. Nice floral characters as well. Complex flavors. Hops and coriander or clove come out right at the beginning. This leads into a mellow and smooth maltiness that lasts until some bittering hops finish it all off. Fruits are abundant, more orange, some sweet and some bitter. Hints of banana and bubblegum tease as well. Full body, tangy and spice filled palate, and a nice complex finish of fruits, spice and hops. Definately a delectable Belgian. Not the best, but I think it was damn good.

Amber pour with a nice white head. Spicy, fruity aroma. Spicy, yeastly and a bit hoppy. This is an interesting twist on a strong belgian. Some banana, typical belgian flavoring, but definately different. It is a nice change, the 9% is hardly noticable.

Bottle at The Avery Experience. Pours gold with a small frothy white head. Banana yeast and wheat with grain malts and fruit hop, some apricot notes. Sweet caramel malt and banana yeast with a cinnamon and nutmeg spice and fruit hop finish. Medium bodied and fizzy.

1 pint bottle. poured bright copper with a thin head. buttery hoppy orange aromas. sweet peach, apricot flavors, slight orange and dry bitterness in the finish. very strange and impressive. not as funky as a belgian but the fruityness seems hop induced. almost seemed spiked with fruit extract. only the brewer knows. If not, then it is a very impressive beer.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2008 Sampled on draft at Zeno’s in State College PA this beer poured a bright golden-amber color with a small yellow-white head. The aroma was sweet sugar, ripe fruits and fruity hops. The flavor was sweet, tangy and sugary with notes of ripe fruits and butterscotch. The body was thick and heavy. The alcohol was well hidden. Excellent.
