uhclem (188), Loveland, Colorado, USA Jun 27, 2008 Beautiful deep amber pour. Head subsides quickly and there is minimal lacing. Nose tells you they weren’t kidding about the oak chips. There’s also a yeasty, malty subtext, all of which is wrapped around a strong alcohol smell. Taste is of caramel, malt, vanilla and oak, with some raisin. Very sweet. Nice, opulent mouthfeel. Aftertaste not unlike that of a good shot bourbon. Not bad, but I doubt I’ll drink it again. hillfiiiiire (283), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Jun 17, 2008 Bottle. This poured syrupy thick with no head. Loads of the oak in the nose with a really solid kick of alcohol (but at 15% no wonder). This stuff was waaaay too sweet though. It was nice and thick on the palate. I just didn’t get this one. Overall, this beer has potential, but it’s just too much weird and sweet going on to make it enjoyably drinkable. skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Jun 17, 2008 Bottled May 2006. Aroma has cramel malty sweetness with loads of raisin, syrup, some wine and some woodiness. Clear, amber-brown coloured with a thin, off-white head. Taste is sweet, very sweet. Bit sugarry. It has caramel malt, raisin, some wine. A nice woody background. Syrupy palate with a full body. Unfortunately a bit overwhelmed with the sweetness. Actually this beer could be a 4+ when it wasn’t so sweet. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Jun 17, 2008 12 oz bottle from Bev4less. Pours a amber color with a small beige head that immediately disappears, no lacing noted. The aroma is rich with vanilla, red wine and bourbon. The flavor is every bit identical to the aroma; If there is caramel in there it is hidden by the whiskey. The mouthfeel is full and malty. The finish is long with lingering bourbon. Overall: A very tasty oaked concoction, not for everybody, but I really liked it. jeffwilliams11 (310), hooterville, Michigan, USA Jun 11, 2008 hazy copper with small white-ish head. intense coconut in the flavor and aroma. tanic from the oak. very warm on the way down. a bit too much in the malt department, lacking enough hop balance to make it drinkable. 19641948 (492), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Jun 6, 2008 Pours a ruddy auburn-orange with a small light beige head. Thick aromas with syrups galore. Maple syrup, dark fruits in syrup, peaches in syrup, you get the hint. Oak and wood. Resinous and sticky. Thick and bold. A fight to choke down. Why such a huge bottle?.... texasbartender (160), Sugarland, Texas, USA Jun 2, 2008 The beer pours a thick slightly hazy copper amber with a tan head that is short lived. The nose is sweet with a hint of wood. The taste is sweet with a heavy mouth feel (almost like a thin syrup or a port), there are notes of wood, hopes, malts and acidity. The finish is a caramel acidity that last for days. I wouldn’t call this beer balanced but I found it enjoyable. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA May 31, 2008 Updated: Mar 7, 2009Batch 1 bottle. Poured a golden-copper color with a thin off-white head that diminished to a ring and left some moderate lacing. Arome of sweet malt, oak, light tartness and some grape fruitiness. Light, sweet grape entry with some moderate caramel malt that leads into a brandy-like fruitiness consisting of plum, grape, and light apple, finishing with a lightly dry oak finish and a hint of alcohol. Full, smooth, and and slick on the palate. Avery catches a lot of hate, but with some age on it this brew is very nice.
