Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Lupulin Reunulin - Brickskeller. Dark clear orange, creamy off white head. Coconut rum and caramelized dark fruit aromas warm to notes of sweet vanilla oak. Sweet bourbon and vanilla flavors overpower the coconut wood tones. Booze is hard and heavy. Full bodied and syrupy, soft carbonation, sweet finish. Age might do some wonders here...

Drain pour. I drank maybe a quarter of the bottle and just couldn’t finish it. Aroma was actually nice. Heavy on the caramel malt and alcohol. Pour was a nasty thick syrupy brown with no bubbles. Looked like gel in the glass. Taste was terrible. No carbonation, strong alcohol and some caramel malt. It just oozed from the glass down my throat. This is terrible.

Bottle, 2005. Pours brown-amber, with the faintest whispy hint of white head. Aroma is vanilla, oak, rich, sweet toffee, alcohol. Taste starts off with a huge cloying sweetness, toffee and caramel, raisins, goes down with a hint of oak and and a big hit of alcohol warmth. Finish is a syrupy sweetness, mouthfeel is pure syrup, sticky, with a very mild, tingly carbonation. This one felt a bit young let it sit for another 3-5 years. 12 oz may be a bit much as well.

Bottle. Pours amber with a thin white head. Aroma is wine, etoh, hops, wood, vanilla. Drinks as above with a semi harsh etoh presence and malty finish. decent.

12 ouncer from Total Wine. Batch #4 from April ’08. Pours a typical barley wine lack-of-head with lakes of tan froth and an amber body. Interesting aromas of parsnip, herbal spicing (almost minty), malty caramel. Strong, in-your-face vanilla, toffee, and smoky oak. Incredibly boozy, cognac-esque alcohol astringency all over, front to back. Finish of dark fruits and apple. The first taste is a monster and smooths out over time, but not by much. Medium/high carbonation and full bodied. Not for the faint of heart; the ABV here is not only unmasked, it’s curb-stomped into your taste buds.

Intense boozy caramel vanilla nose, almost like a scotch. Deep orange with a minimal, but thick and tight head with some lacing. Huge vanilla toffee sweetness, no noticeable hop bitterness. Body was medium carbonation, syrupy, with massive alcohol cutting through. This reminded me of a slightly carbonated highly oaked Cognac. Although probably my least favorite of the series, it is an excellent extreme example of where beer can go and a must try.

Sampled from the bottle at the Brickskeller’s Lupulin Reunulin. Pours a clear, copper amber with a tight, thin white head. Aroma is mild but mostly vanilla and oak. Flavor is heavy on the vanilla, cherry, oak, port, dark rum, wood pulp and whiskey. Finish is hot and thick. It’s a little tough to drink and really beats you over the head with the oak flavors. A little subtlety might have gone a long way.

Bottle @ Brickskeller’s Lupulin Reunulin event. Pours a bold, orange-amber color; light-tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Tons of maple syrup, toasty oak and wood resins, syrupy dried dark fruits in the aroma; dried apricots, peaches. Full mouthfeel: chewy, intense dried dark fruits, caramel, lots of woodiness and alcohol; quite sweet; a touch of alcohol showing through; sticky, messy beer, but I thought this was still pretty tasty. Lengthy finish: lots of sugar, maple syrup, and toasty oak and vanilla.
