Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Batch 2, bottled May 06I’ve kinda almost been dreading this one, having read previous reviews and comments. Sure enough, it smells very sweet and boozy, but not as much as I’d feared. But still, a lot of rum, molassess, butterscotch and caramel. Flavor is similiar, with pretty much a laundry list of syrupy, gooey flavors. And it seems very thick and syrupy, as well. And another funny thing- I don’t know how much oak character there is when fresh, but its almost non-existant at this point. Or if its there, its covered up by honey caramel rum vanilla toffee - you get the idea.

Batch 2: Never smelled a beer so caramelly, almost like melted werthers! And man it’s a strong aroma.. Pours a dark enough amber that you can’t see through with a thin but frothy off-white head that lingers. Initial taste is very caramelly and malty, with a creamy texture. Swallowing brings out the strong oak and typical barleywine flavors before it settles in to a nice smooth caramel aftertaste on the tongue. No hops in sight. Warms the stomach for sure though!

Wow. This is a sipper. Hazy amber pout with very little head. Sweet aroma compounded by alcohol. I think this may be the sweetest beer I have drank. Sweet malt, caramel, figs and raisins. No bitterness.

12oz bottle. Virtually no head to speak of. Lots of caramel and candied fruits on the nose. Both aroma and flavor where very powerful. Not something you would drink on a hot summer day, more like a butt ass cold winter night. A very underrated brew.

This is a complicated beer to rate. Sometimes a near 5, other times around a 2... It is very sweet and carmelly as advertised. The initial taste is well-balanced and sugary, but it is followed by an unpleasant taste of pure alcohol. The aftertaste is amazing- you really get the oakey flavor here. Very delicious! But, for me (and my drinking mate), the middle taste made this beer almost undrinkable.

Pours a clear amber with a small beige head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is scotch, sweet fruit, alcohol, vanilla and oak. Flavor is over sweet candi sugar, apple, raisin, vanilla, melon, berry, caramel and oak. The alcohol is very evident and burns the side of the mouth on the way down. Very thick body, very little carbonation. Long oaky finish.

Bottle. Pours a light red/brown with a thin beige head. The aroma makes me think about opening a very old wooden cask of brandy. The taste is pretty much oak, vanilla, some really sweet fruit flavored candies and of course a strong alcohol presence. Really not as hot as I had expected, also pretty unusual. Not anywhere near a typical BW.
