Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

12 oz bottle. I had a tough time finishing this one after a long night of nothing but stouts. Lots of sweetness, and flavors of clove and corriander. Taste nothing like any barlyey wine I have ever had.

’06 Vintage. Pours opaque orange/brown with a small orange/tan head. Strong and sweet aroma of apricot and alcohol, with strong notes of oak/vanilla, and just a slight undertone of something grassy and earthy. Flavor is not as sweet as I expected from the aroma or the other ratings I’ve read. Although fairly sweet with notes of molasses and just a bit of alcohol, there is a nice grassy hop presence, a bit of cinnamon like spice toward the finish, a light note of apricot, and a woody undertone throughout. Palate is full, syrupy, lightly sweet, with just a bit of hops, some warming alcohol, and a dry spiced feeling left over. I think this will definitely do very well in a couple more years.

Hard, very hard, to pick out the non-sugar elements here. No head, just sugar. No aroma, just sugar. No hops, just sugar. No palate, just sugar. The sugar hides the alcohol very well, ’cause the alcohol kicks your ass unsuspectingly. Style designation is Barley Wine, but I propose a new category to explicitly label the likes of this as a sugar ale.

Bottle. [#1300] Fantastic bubbly beige head that mostly lasted. Light reddish amber and light cloudy color. Lovely thick aroma of raisins just like a good port wine. Very malty base, with notes of toffee or butterscotch, apricot and other overripe fruit, hint of brown sugar, vanilla, wood and light liquorish, like feel as well. Very complex. Very full bodied with a thick thick texture and a soft carbonation. Moderated to heavy sweet with light notes of bitterness. Overripe fruity lingering finish. Quit amazing brew I thought.

Courtesy of Degarth. Thanks, Joe. 2007. Dark reddish orange body with no head of course. Aromas of tropical fruits, bourbon, malts and woody earthy notes. On the tongue we have bourbon, oak, dark tropical fruits. Medium bodied, sticky but not cloying. Finishes with a nice hit of alcohol warmth, medium length and comforting. Excellent!

The 12 ounce bottle poured a clear, ruby red colored beverage with a modest smooth off-white head that was mostly diminishing but that left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was complex as one would expect with huge caramel malt nose. There are additional notes of vanilla, oak and sweet sherry. The body was full with soft carbonation and a thick, oily texture. The flavor explodes sweet on the palate and stays that way throughout the long finish. There is a decided alcohol warmth at the end as well.

355 ml bottle. Cloady orange body with a small dense off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, dry prunes, syrup, oak and plenty of alcohol. Flavor is much the same, dominated by sweet malt syrup and alcohol, the hops are working to get this liquid in balance but this is a bit out of control for my part. It’s interesting, but I can’t honestly say it’s nice. Had World Wide Stout after this and that felt refreshing.
