Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

From Bottle. Bottled in 2005. Poured orangish, with an almost non-existent fizzy white head. Aroma was fruity, with hints of molasses. Flavor of all kinds of fruit, grapes oranges, raisins. As well as vanilla and oak, it is also full of sugars. The alcohol is very up front, and almost overbearing. Syrupy feel. Sticky! Very heavy beer. Full bodied. Long, lingering aftertaste. I enjoyed the beer, could have let it aged longer. I could only drink half of the glass.

On tap at Dr. Bill’s house. Subtle yeast fruit, starfruit juices, and tannic dust. Pours amber, clear, rimmed with white foam. Flavor is a subtle sweat of sweet oak and wispy current over raisins. Stinky Avery yeast dominate the middle of the palate. However, carrying 14.5% over this muddle isn’t bad. A little boldly estery towards the end, but nothing enamoring.

Aroma is heavy with lots of molasses, light hopps with a heavy bouquet of licorice, and ruby port. Appearance is beautiful orange/brown but very small fully diminishing head. Slightly hazy. Flavor is initially heavy sweet, moderately bitter and then finishes heavy sweet and slightly sour. Finish is long. Palate is full and texture is syrupy. Flat Carbonation. Finish is moderate/heavy alcoholic. Hard beer to rate as I like the flavor and overall feel but the alcohol is upfront. I mean I like the content (14.5%) but it’s so hard to hide an amount like that but considering it’s a barley wine I’ll let it slide. I will recommend it as it’s one of the best I’ve had from Avery and overall very very good.

Very odd aroma of sweet cheese and honey. The pour is a darker orange with a thinnish white head. The flavor is sweet oak hops. not quite syrupy. But very full bodied. The flavor is highlighted with sweet vanilla. Very interesting, not an easy drink, but very much worth the money.

Orange red with no head. Aroma has sugar, malts & alcohol. Taste of oak, caramel, sheery, fruits (apricot). Sweet. Alcohol is only easily felt compared to ABV. Overall strong & powerfull Barley wine!

Bottle courtesy of Boboski: Poured a clear dark amber color ale with a small foamy head with little retention and no lacing. Aroma of brown sugar is domination with some subtle alcohol signs. Taste is dominated by some very sweet malt with very little hops and also very little signs of oak. Alcohol was way too predominant and the beer was way too sweet for my personal taste. It seems that Avery big beers series are either hit or miss and this one would be a miss.

Jacksonville, Fl. Total Wines, 12 oz bottle. Sparkling copper to red pour with a quickly dissipating white head. Sweet, brandy-like aroma with hints of sugar cane and molasses. Flavor has a nice nutty undertone that permeates throughout. Pick up notes of sherry, candied sugar, a bit of caramel, maple syrup and chocolate. Quite complex - almost liquer-like. Mouthfeel is thick and sticky - in the right way. High abv is hidden remarkably well. Solid barley wine.

Beer smells of oak, alcohol, and malt. The beer is a nice reddish amber color with no head but some foam sticking to the side of the glass as it goes down. There really is no hop presence in this at all. It is extremely sweet and malty with a huge oak flavor. There is also a ton of alcohol. It is pretty strong on the palate. It tastes good, but I dont know if I could drink this often. The cognac comparisson by the rater before is pretty on point.
