An almost sherry type aroma gives way to an appearance that is deep auburn and oily. The flavor is very strong malt with an over the top sweetness that totally destroy’s your palate. A strong alcoholic blast finishes in your chest like a shot of scotch. I’m sorry but this is over the top. porterhouse (1152), Alna, Maine, USA

Effervescent. Half inch of orangey-biege head. Aroma, whoa!, way sweet - huge caramel-sweet-syrupy aroma. Smells boozy. Probably some sweet vanilla as well. Mouthfeel is really smooth but really syrupy-feeling. Sticky. Flavor is hugely sweet -caramel and red candy apple glaze sweet. Alcohol quite present. Vanilla taste is also strong. Without a doubt the sweetest beer I’ve had. Didn’t exactly dislike it, esp. after I got throught the initial taste assault, and I enjoy sweet, deserty things in general. But for a beer I think this is too much. Gonna be hard to put numbers on this one. elektronikfagteknikerlærling (892), kbh, Denmark

Its cold as hell outside so i decided it was time to drink a stout barley wine such as this. pours clear amber with a nice off white head. ok lacing. aroma warm toasted oak sweet fruity plum vanilla and molasses dominates with some roasted toffee/caramel characteristics as well as a hint of earthiness cocoa and alcohol. something very vinous about the aroma. very nice aroma. flavor sweet vanilla and toffee with nice bitter caramel cocoa notes and some spicy black pepper alcohol. bitter caramel sweet vanilla warm alcohol finish. full thick rich body. this would make a great dessert beer. it would be fantastic with a caramel and apple dessert. i will have to remember this one. i really enjoyed it. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 24, 2007 Not my thing, overly sweet and cloying, although i’m giving it a chance with another bottle aging. Pours dark copper with a thin beige head. Oak, caramel, cherry and vanilla all come out in the flavor, but the overall sweet shock was just to much. Way to much alcohol shows though, maybe it will settle a bit with age. This is a grumpy beer that really needs a nap. stison42 (318), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 21, 2007 Dirty red. Thick winey texture. Rich and it feels like it goes straight to the stomach, kind of like a shot does. Tasted more like cherry then any caramel, but was still very good. DirtyMartini (194), Los Angeles, Alabama, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 20, 2007 after my first sip i was disappointed i hadnt bought 2 bottles when i had a chance so i could cellar it. a beautiful barleywine IMO. yes, the alcohol burn was there, but it was a nice burn. without it, i dont think i wouldve liked the beer as much. a pretty copper/orange color...no head at all...poured into an oversized snifter. a sweet caramel and vanilla flavor. highly recommended. swoopjones (1896), Buffalo, New York, USA
