bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Sep 6, 2006 "Bottled 2005 Poured a amber color with zero head. Aroma was of strong oak tons of it and some caramel. Flavor was of carmel big oak something a little to sweet for me as well. Mouthfeel was sticky. Beer was way to sweet."
jayme9874 (756), Hamburg, New York, USA Sep 5, 2006 Clear dull amber. No head, just some lace clinging to the sides. Big caramel nose with a lot of pleasant oak/cask. (conjured memories of stille nacht reserva 2000) Full bodied, big malty sweet vanilla palate, oak notes settle down the sweetness but it always lingers, trace of hops but not much. Oak integrates very nicely. Just a big, unique, rich, excessive, sweet, oaky, thick barleywine that kicks the shit out of you. Perfect for funnelng. Alcohol is there but actually adds character and a certain balance to the brew.
I really have no business drinking 12 oz in 20 minutes. Good shit here boys. Perfect for after dinner. Will revisit. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Sep 5, 2006 Bottle. Batch 2. Rich ruby-amber beer with a nice off-white head. Sweet oaky caramel malt aroma with some raisins and dates. Sweet dcaramel malt flavor with raisin and strawberry/cherry fruitiness. brown sugar, toffee, and light oak. Lingering fruity sweetness. A bit too sweet, but hides alcohol well. Richer bodied. BobbyW3363 (154), Birmingham, Alabama, USA Sep 4, 2006 Really nice red-amber color woth a big off-white head that leaves lots of lacing. Aroma of oak, caramel, and some alcohol. Flavor is very sweet and oakey, with caramel, some vanilla, light fruit, and some alcohol. Defintiely some port character. Full-bodied and syrupy mouthfeel. Very different, and unlike any other alcoholic beverage I’ve had. Complex. I really like this, enough to have paid over $7 for one several different times. smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA Sep 1, 2006 Pours deep red with slight head that retains (minor lacing). Aroma is vanilla, caramel, cedar, and alcohol. mouth very full and sticky. Flavor very sweet, vanilla, caramel, bourbon (has sherry character), Alcoholic burn in finish it does not hide alcohol (but i actually kinda like that). swirl (267), collingswood, New Jersey, USA Aug 26, 2006 Very enjoyable beer well worth the money I had to pay in order to try it in my region. A big beer that is reminiscent of a barleywine. The vanilla flavor was absolutely divine only problem is that I wish I had more to enjoy. xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 26, 2006 Cedar closet aroma, with liqour, whisky distiller, cherries and pit fruit. kentucky spirits, scary shoe ferment. Looks like barleywine on the hich fresh honey pour, to produce no head. It’s a rust brown nearly opaque beer. Big sweet cherry vanilla sick sweet syrup yuck. hard to discern flavors behind oodles of sticky sugar - caramel faintly. Palate is of a sickly sweet syrup. heavy, high gravity. potent. not at all what I had in mind. mnapier (10), Washington, USA Aug 23, 2006 Batch 2 (12oz) May 2006 in an Authentic German style Luettich Balloon glass -
Burgundy, & a slight haze in appearance. A mild reminder stays on the glass, of the recently pour that was started a few minutes earlier.
Taking the glass and swirling it around I notice an air of caramel, but the overwhelming scent of alcohol almost, erodes the oak aroma that is supposed to be present.
A few seconds of reflecting on the aroma and I take my sip, taking in an initial spiciness, followed up by a slight tartness, and a little hint of wood. Pausing for only a second, I take another sip and notice subtle smokiness, followed by vanilla, with the bully of alcohol rearing its head.
Overall mouth feel, lingers in various parts of my throat & tongue.
