Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Very enjoyable beer well worth the money I had to pay in order to try it in my region. A big beer that is reminiscent of a barleywine. The vanilla flavor was absolutely divine only problem is that I wish I had more to enjoy.

Cedar closet aroma, with liqour, whisky distiller, cherries and pit fruit. kentucky spirits, scary shoe ferment. Looks like barleywine on the hich fresh honey pour, to produce no head. It’s a rust brown nearly opaque beer. Big sweet cherry vanilla sick sweet syrup yuck. hard to discern flavors behind oodles of sticky sugar - caramel faintly. Palate is of a sickly sweet syrup. heavy, high gravity. potent. not at all what I had in mind.

Batch 2 ྫྷoz) May 2006 in an Authentic German style Luettich Balloon glass - Burgundy, & a slight haze in appearance. A mild reminder stays on the glass, of the recently pour that was started a few minutes earlier. Taking the glass and swirling it around I notice an air of caramel, but the overwhelming scent of alcohol almost, erodes the oak aroma that is supposed to be present. A few seconds of reflecting on the aroma and I take my sip, taking in an initial spiciness, followed up by a slight tartness, and a little hint of wood. Pausing for only a second, I take another sip and notice subtle smokiness, followed by vanilla, with the bully of alcohol rearing its head. Overall mouth feel, lingers in various parts of my throat & tongue.

Even coppery color with minimal head. It’s at room temperature, and the aroma is malty sweet and fantastic. Both oak and alcohol are apparent, and the latter singes my nosehair. Taste is fairly sweet, but light, with a vanilla cherry hint, and the alcohol was only mildly astringent, especially for such a high content. Well worth the cash at $7/12oz

This beer was just too sweet for me. I really couldn’t get over the sweetness to appreciate its other qualities. I did notice some oak and vanilla, and caramel. Almost no hops in this beer. More like an American strong ale rather than a barley wine.

Well done barley wine. Avery does not mess around. It is not easy to make such a big beer drinkable. Predictably sweet, with the focus being on malt and sugar here. I don’t like over-hopped barley wines, and this one delivers. My wife tasted banana at colder temps. Of course you get some hot alcohol, how could you not? It is still very good. Did not find the oak "very apparent."

Bottle sampled with Stegsosaurus. Pours bronze with no head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, oak, and vanilla. Flavor is smooth, caramel, oak, molasses, and vanilla. Good body, excellent brew.

12 oz bottle: A strong aroma of caramel, malt , and lumber yard wood. Color is a beautiful glowing amber with thin covering of foam. The flavor of this beer is sweet with sugar and character of oak wood of course. A little to sweet for me to truly enjoy but the background of oak wood is a nice reminder of another oak aged strong ale i had few months ago.
