alobar (1006), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 28, 2006 Caramel and fruity aroma. Off-white head. Quickly dissipates. Dark cloudy amber color. Vanilla, malts, syrupy taste. Too much of an edge from the alcohol. boto (1319), Granby, Connecticut, USA Jul 22, 2006 2005 bottling: This pours into the glass a clear, amber color. There was just a bit of an off-white head that was gone almost instantly. The aroma is quite potent. There is a big sweetness to it. Vanilla is the main component, with some caramel and alcohol also. The taste is a bit syrupy and sweet. Alcohol is evident. I’m not sure where the oak chips come into this one. I think that this needs to sit for quite awhile. It should be good in a few years. jzzbassman (838), New Albany, Mississippi, USA Jul 16, 2006 Big aroma of oak and vanilla, this starts out promising, but then just goes wrong. Way too much fusel alcohol just runs roughshod over everything, which does nothing to cut the sweetness. I’ll age my other bottle and see if it gets less one dimensional. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Jul 15, 2006 (Bottle, Batch 2, May 2006) Pours a clear amber body with a small beige head. Aroma of oak, pear, port, vanilla, and ginger. Flavor of vanilla, oak, banana crème pudding, and a bit of fruity sourness. The effort was there, but just not quite to my liking. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Jul 14, 2006 12 oz bottle: Light amber w/ a thin, short lived off white head. Oak aroma is very strong @ first, then alcohol takes over w/ some raisiny esters and toasty malt. Woody oak becomes less, but still there as it warms. Very sweet throughout. Some sugary flavors and alcohol, seems fairly one dimensional to this point for a big beer. Light raisiny and toasty malt flavor. Sweet, sugary flavored finish w/ an oaky and herbal hop aftertaste. Full body, slightly hot m/f, low med. carbonation, and fairly smooth. Maybe some age would give it a little more complexity at this point, but @ almost 15% ABV, it should gain a lot with age. beastiefan2k (1590), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA Jul 13, 2006 3rd beer for my BW fest. 12 oz split 3 was into brandy glassses. Poured copper clear, with very little lacing. This may really be the first beer that the aroma is too strong. I mean I can’t handle it. I am actually taking points off for that. Lots of alcohol, also this may be the first beer where I really smell OAK. I do enjoy the taste a lot. Not as overpowering like the aroma. A very sweet, sherry/cherry alcohol flavor, burn in the throat. Exact opposite of a Drakes. NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Jul 12, 2006 bottle. Big thanks to SoLan for the trade on this. Very cloudy mahogany pour with no head. The lacing is thick and resinous. The alcohol is apparent immediately after the pour, but sniffing closer to the goblet reveals delicate caramel, vanilla, and burboun. The alcohol is much more hidden in the flavor and comes across and mere warmth in the throat. This stuff is remarkably like burboun. It’s syrupy with a dense vanilla, oaken sweetness. The finish brings out strong notes of port. It’s enjoyable and bold to make a slow-sippin’ brew. I find the first half of the glass slowly becomes gratingly sweet, but by the end it gets more palatable. beervana (781), Libertyville, Illinois, USA Jul 11, 2006 (05.25.06) 12 oz brown bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. Bottled 2005. OG 1.146. 14.5% ABV. Fruity, alcohol, sweet malt flavors. Poured clear orange with tiny white head. Soft carbonaton. Full bodied ale that starts very sweet with burnt caramel and cotton candy flavor. Slight sharpness. Thick and syrupy. Finished with light malt sweetness. Smooth, rich and very sweet, like a mead-barleywine blend. Alcohol well-hidden in this dangerously drinkable beer. An excellent sipping beer.
