ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Jun 14, 2006 Updated: Jan 6, 2008Clear amber body with a surprisingly large head. Almost no lacing though. Aroma was oak, sugar, big caramel, light alcohol. Extremely sweet finish. Very hot, very sweet. Big flavors, no balance.. yet again. harmfuldrunk (288), New Jersey, USA Jun 13, 2006 looks are not very special the taste itself is strong winey sugary and a bit of that oak they speak of. the malt is nice and it is very rich but all of it does not go all of too far. the alcohol is heavy not too much for someone like me... not a beer one would like to drink to the head. it cost ten bucks i stole it tho so ha eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 11, 2006 Bottled 2005, 14.5%. Lots of rich sweet fruit coming from the bottle upon opening. The pour was amber red brown with no head, no lacing, and only a slow steady stream of very minute bubbles. The aroma was sweet caramel and oak. The flavor was caramel, maple, strong oak, and just cloying sweetness all around. Somewhat reminiscent of Sammy’s Triple Bock, this was way too imbalanced with an annoying combination of wood to go along. I like oak aged beers, but in combination with a one dimensional sweet beer like this, no good. Better that SA’s Tripel Bock, but that’s not a compliment. Mouthfeel was syrup, alcohol warm, and with just enough carbonation to stimulate the taste buds for a pretty sticky sweet experience. blankboy (3156), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 9, 2006 Bottle shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a cloudy copper-orange with a spare diminishing white head. Nice aroma of sweet malt, oak, spices, alcohol and hops. Very sweet flavour of malt, vanilla, whiskey and brown sugar. Medium bodied. It’s somewhat enjoyable but it’s a little overly sweet and boozy, definitely one to share. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 8, 2006 Updated: Mar 15, 2007Bottle sampled with Beerded one. Pours bronze with no head at all. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, oak, and vanilla (its beautiful). Flavor is smooth for 14.5%, prodominately caramel, there is also the presence of oak, molasses, vanilla, alcohol, Good health body, damn good brew. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA Jun 6, 2006 Pretty tastey. The aroma is butterscotch, barley, hops, leather, vanilla, scotch, oak, and carmel. The flavor is oak, carmel, chocolate, dash of coffee, with some molasses and vanilla, and alcohol. very good brew. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Jun 6, 2006 Updated: Jun 7, 2006Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, my bottle. Poured clear copper with a small head, very bubbly. Smells of oak and booze, sweet toasty malt - maybe a tad too sweet, but the oak is very nice. Taste is the same only moreso - way over the top oak - vanilla - and very sweet malt, big boozy finish. Mouth is sticky, somewhat flat, alcoholic - good, but hard to drink a whole one by yourself, what I call Avery-itis. MrEcted1 (144), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA Jun 3, 2006 This one is a bit underrated if you ask me. Pours copper with minimal head, but what do you expect from a barleywine ale that measures up at 14.5%? This is a sweet beer (as with most barleywines) that has dark and fruity characteristics as well. Deep and complex. I couldn’t stop smelling this brew it’s great! Being oak aged you get a nice oak flavor to boot. In my opinion this beer hides the high ABV well with it’s sweet malts. You definitely get the warm tummy feeling but that’s because this bad boy is 14.5%. On the nose it’s a bit more harsh, but on the palate it’s wonderful. I Recommend this beer!
