COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate.

This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Definitely not my kind of beer. Too fruity. I would take it over a Bud Light, but at $8 a 12 oz bottle, I’m not buying this one again.

Pours a very red amber, lots of head but settled rather quickly. Aroma is big and noticeable immediately upon cracking - oak, caramel and booze. Taste is sweet caramel and vanilla, oak and fig with boozy heat but dangerously drinkable. Very good.

9/VIII/14 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from Charles Street Liquor (Boston, US) @ home - BB: n/a, bottled: IV/2009, batch 5 (2014-901) Thanks to Annelies and Thomas for the bottle!

Little hazy red brown to brownish purple beer, small aery off-white head, unstable, dissipates immediately. Aroma: lots of chocolate, malty, honey, chocolate bread, bit yeasty, cocoa powder, sweet. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: sweet, caramel, sugary, lots of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, some banana, sweet malts. Aftertaste: sugary, sweet, caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, more vanilla, more chocolate, raisins, some alcohol. Man, this is good stuff!!!

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2014 12 oz 2009 bottle. First time trying this beer so I don’t know if it is past it’s peak but it is certainly a great beer. Slightly sweet, slightly oaky, and fabulously rich, this brew has an excellent balance of flavors. High 16.4% ABV is nicely hidden -- drinks like a ~9% ale.

On tap @ Uber. Barleywines are not my thing, but had to try this one... listed here as 15.5%. Pours dark caramel with medium creamy off-white head. Aroma is boozy roasty caramel malt, with strong notes of rye and bourbon. Taste is super sweet thick caramel malt, lots of vanilla and oak, lingers syrupy sweet on the finish. Rich toffee and dark caramel mid-palate. Opens up a bit as it warms. Huge beer, the booze and sweetness permeates. I don’t think I’ve ever said this (and maybe it’s the Samael’s talking...), but it seems like the sugar and abv could be reeled back a bit and this would still have the same great flavor profile. I dunno. I’d have another.

Bottle. Pours transparent brown with a thin ring of beige head. Aroma of oak and caramel with some vanilla. Taste starts off sweet, almost too sweet, with caramel and dark fruits.

Pours deep mostly clear amber with some floaties and minimal head. Smell is deep caramel richness, candi sugar, some dark fruits, vanilla, oak. Taste is whoa - tons of vanilla, oak, booze, layer upon layer of sweet caramel. Thick sweet palate. Better than expected and I am an Avery lover.

355 ml. bottle split by 3 @ “Memorabel Tastingkje”. Thanks to tderoeck! 2009 Vintage. 16.45 % ABV. Basically no head, lightly cloudy dark red, brownish amber. This beer showcases exactly how oxidation should taste like in the most optimal of situations. Very thick pear syrup, sweet sherry, oak, molasses, insane amounts of sugar, nuts, toffee, sweet spices, cookies, very thick & sweet malts, wood, dark fruits, incredibly thick & sweet sugar sherry oxidation, apple & pear syrup, prune, vanilla, thick syrup, warming but not a booze bomb as it could have been, the booze & sugar really held it up. Soft carbonation, thick sugar, easy to drink. Amazing stuff. Damn fine stuff.

Bottle (12 Oz): cloudy amber with little head. Sweet! Carmel and vanilla flavors. Boozy in the end. Defiantly a desert brew.

ryecatcher (784) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 2, 2014
Bottle (2014 edition). Pours a dark, honey amber color with a a big off-white head, excellent retention and lacing. Nose is candy sugar, malt, honey, dates, figs, orange zest, toffee. Mouth is as sticky sweet as it smells, big and candy-like. Like drinking a liquid coffee cake: full of dates, raisins, peaches in heavy syrup, warm custard pie -- definitely for dessert. Tanniny oakiness comes through hard at the finish. Really enjoyed this one.
