12 oz. bottle Batch #6 bottled in March 2010. Pours hazy dark copper/reddish hue with a tight soapy khaki head that dissipates to a thin foamy film collar. Aroma is sweet and woody with booze and sweet sugary burnt malt and dried fruit scents. Taste is woody booze sweet burnt sugary malt and some fruitiness with a wine like dryness. Palate is full and sticky with a somewhat creamy feel and it finishes dry. I love it, because it does everything It should do... Taste good and makes me feel warm and satisfied!
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 ruggedman (646) - Portland, Maine, USA - JUN 13, 2013
Funny thing about aroma, it’s so near and dear to memory. The first sniff of this brew brought me immediately back to the Mephistopheles stout; though that’s where similarities stop. This beers appearance of reddish ruddy brown and a ring leave a little to be desired to make me come running from across the room to try it. Appearances aren’t everything as eharmony will tell you, and tasting this beer is the real reward you get here. The flavors of sweet nectar, oak, and maple syrup dance across the palate. Solid, reminds me very much of a lost abbey angels share, but with a signature Avery taste.
4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 jlieber17 (201) - San Diego, California, USA - JUN 7, 2013
Bottle. To me, the best part of a beer is its aroma; and when a beer has a great nose, I will usually sniff more than I will swallow. Definitely, that is the case here. The vanilla, coconut, caramel, pecan cookie aroma is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Syrupy sweetness; toffee, vanilla, oak, vanilla, roasted malt, vanilla. Sticky mouthfeel. Warm finish; 12 ounces has me feeling nice and toasty. I can’t wait to try one of these with a couple years on it; stay tuned.

Strong aromas of vanilla, coconut milk and burnt turbinado. Deep crimson color with a copper hue. Strong spice and bourbon upfront with an immense blast of oak, amber malt, slick syrup, molasses and heavy booze finish. Some undertones of barley, dates, vanilla, herbs and maple. Overall, this beer has massive flavor and complexity. Intense booze and bourbon overtones. Really warms you up. I’d give this an A+ rating. Would love to see more beers like this from Avery.

2006 bottle in 5/13. Age did this one well. Pours translucent brown with little carbonation, no head. Smooth, sweet, with flavors of chocolate, toffee, anise, dark fruit, and more and more and more...finishes dry and very satisfying.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jcos (1203) - Maryland, USA - MAY 13, 2013
Location/Date:2006 Bottle split with Dave on 5/12/2013.
Appearance: Pours an opaque brown.
Aroma: Aroma of oak, caramel.
Taste: Really malt forward, caramel, some kid of dark fruit, oaky, faint vanilla.
Palate:Medium body, quick aftertaste.
Summary: I bet many of Avery’s crazy abv beers could use age on them - this one was 7 years old and tasty. I don’t have the patience to follow through with that for other beers, but maybe one day.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Brouwerij (501) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Bottle thanks to Alemax. Pours a burnt copper with minimal head. Settles almost immediately with no lacing. Aroma is oaky, mild bourbon, caramel, vanilla, fruity, pear, with significant alcohol. Flavor is sweet and oaky up front, followed by tones of vanilla, caramel, and more oak. Slightly bitter, oaky aftertaste that lingers. Quite sweet throughout. Surprisingly palatable despite the high alcohol content, Avery truly is the master of big beers. Soft carbonation, medium to full body, smooth texture, and a warming mouthfeel and finish. An excellent, strong, sweet, malty beer. One hell of a barleywine.

Smell is sweet, slightly oxidized and intense with caramel, toffee, alcohol, vanilla, leather, raisins in rum, prunes, figs, cookie dough, vanilla fudge, charred wood, orange zest, roasted coconut and hints of pine needles, roasted hazelnuts and resin. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter, very tiny fruity tart and malty with caramel, toffee, alcohol, wood, vanilla fudge, prunes, raisins, figs, brandy, coconut, english fruit cake, leather, roasted nuts and hints of pine needles and resin. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, boozy, round and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and tiny fruity tart with caramel, toffee, figs, raisins, prunes, cherries in brandy, cookie dough, charred wood, roasted nuts and pine needles. A huge beer that has matured nicely. Would be interesting to try a newer vintage for comparison.
