Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Bottled in Apr 2007. Batch 3
Served in a snifter. The color is a deep ruby or garnet red. There was a bit of khaki.
The aroma is a lot of maple, or maybe butterrum. Vanilla and oak come through nicely. Still ripe with alcohol.
The flavor is hot with alcohol. Again with the maple.
Pretty much the same as I remember. No scoring adjustment.

When is enough enough? Smell like scotch whiskey, and tastes like scotch whiskey. Hell, it must be scotch whiskey. It all tasted fine. My score reflects that. I think everybody should try it. With that being said, Samaels doesn’t really have many characteristics of a beer..

Bottle scored from Matta, thank you Matt for the opportunity! Slightly opaque amber colored. Scant head formation and no lacing. Tannic, vanilla, tons of residual sugar in nose. Thick and coating to the palate until the alcohol dries everything up. Very malty, sweet, sugary. Definately an after meal sipper and shared with another. I split this one with DarkElf and the Walking Man brewer and his crew. The most common comment heard was: "This is Beer?’ Decent, decadent and on the fringes.

Bottle, 2007. Pours deep red with a thin beige head. The aroma is vinous and oaky, very sweet. The flavor is far too sweet with some vanilla and dark fruits. Alcohol is there but not overly so given the high ABV. I wasn’t very impressed by this beer.

Clear red-golden, no head. Aroma of alcohol, sweet apples very cider-like. Big alc taste, quite sweet with apples. Burning alcohol in the throat. Sweet finish.

Clear amber body under a white head. Laced well. Gin and clean caramel malt in the aroma. The flavor has a lot more going for it than gin. You can taste the alcohol but it’s a clean alcochol and it complements the rest of the flavor. It starts with bready, yeasty carmel malt and then hits you with some booze and orangey spice. In the finish the caramel is complimented by vanilla and a touch of hazelnut. There’s some woodiness in the finish but it’s overwhelmed by the beer’s sweetness. A lip-licking mouthfeel on this one, rich and sticky. Overall this is a good beer, it’s full-flavored and challenging but I wish the malts they’re featuring were more complex - some sort of smoked malt would be a good fit.

Bottle. Bit hazy orange body with an off-white small creamy head. Very vinous aroma with tons of malt, spme alcohol and ripe fruit. The oak is present too. Heavy sweet aroma with lots of alcohol. Notes of oak, vanilla and caramel. Heavy alcoholic in the finish. Medium to creamy bodied. Its way too sweet and sugary.
