Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Pours copper, no head at all. I have to say this was a gagger and I sipped it slow the whole time. The alcohol just overides this so much, and I didn’t know at the time but kept saying it tasted like an extremely strong barley wine, and I don’t really like that style. Didn’t really pick up any oak flavors, just the usually barley wine fruitness with an alcohol kick. I fell asleep with about a 1/4 of it left and didn’t even care, I did not like this at all.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small short lived white head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma of super sweet syrup, caramel, oak, vanilla, and dark fruits. Taste is way too sweet and cloying with a very harsh note of alcohol. A rather disappointing offering from Avery. This beer proves that bigger isn’t always better.

Really disappointed in this brew. The aroma is fairly pungent, and the taste almost makes me wanna puke. Too much alcohol here. I had the Dogfish Head 120, which has much more ABV, and I wasn’t nearly as offended by that brew as I am with this one (in fact, I loved it).

"Bottled 2005 Poured a amber color with zero head. Aroma was of strong oak tons of it and some caramel. Flavor was of carmel big oak something a little to sweet for me as well. Mouthfeel was sticky. Beer was way to sweet."

12 oz bottled in 2005. Amber and clear. Minimal head with champagne sized carbonation. Sweet aroma. Big fruit (passion fruit and oranges) along with hard and cotton candy. Sticky sweet fruit greats your lips with candy and syrup not far behind. I really did not notice any significant wood (vanilla hints perhaps). Creamy sticky body. I liked this more the first time I had it, but it’s not too bad. Strictly dessert.

Bottle. pours a clear, dark copper color with no head. It LOOKS thick! Sweet malty aroma with tons of fruity notes. Thick and sweet with a smoky, woody oakiness that reminds me of a campfire. Very fruity with tons of melon and tropical fruit notes. Sweet bourbon finish.

Pours a light amber color with thin off-white head. Aroma is of caramel malts with hin\ts of oak and alcohol. Flavor is very sweet and malty with a slightly bitter finish and alcohol warming. A decent barley wine but not my favorite.
