COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate.

This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Wow, this beer kind of smells like rubber cement. Could it really be all those oak esters? Wow, this is syrupy. Kind of like ass syrup. Now, I’m not one to shy away from barley-wines, but finishing half of this beer was a challenge. Perhaps this beer has it’s place somewhere, but definitely not anywhere near me.

Bottle. Pours transparent brown with a thin ring of beige head. Aroma of oak and caramel with some vanilla. Taste starts off sweet, almost too sweet, with caramel and dark fruits.

Pours deep mostly clear amber with some floaties and minimal head. Smell is deep caramel richness, candi sugar, some dark fruits, vanilla, oak. Taste is whoa - tons of vanilla, oak, booze, layer upon layer of sweet caramel. Thick sweet palate. Better than expected and I am an Avery lover.

355 ml. bottle split by 3 @ “Memorabel Tastingkje”. Thanks to tderoeck! 2009 Vintage. 16.45 % ABV. Basically no head, lightly cloudy dark red, brownish amber. This beer showcases exactly how oxidation should taste like in the most optimal of situations. Very thick pear syrup, sweet sherry, oak, molasses, insane amounts of sugar, nuts, toffee, sweet spices, cookies, very thick & sweet malts, wood, dark fruits, incredibly thick & sweet sugar sherry oxidation, apple & pear syrup, prune, vanilla, thick syrup, warming but not a booze bomb as it could have been, the booze & sugar really held it up. Soft carbonation, thick sugar, easy to drink. Amazing stuff. Damn fine stuff.

Bottle (12 Oz): cloudy amber with little head. Sweet! Carmel and vanilla flavors. Boozy in the end. Defiantly a desert brew.

Bottle (2014 edition). Pours a dark, honey amber color with a a big off-white head, excellent retention and lacing. Nose is candy sugar, malt, honey, dates, figs, orange zest, toffee. Mouth is as sticky sweet as it smells, big and candy-like. Like drinking a liquid coffee cake: full of dates, raisins, peaches in heavy syrup, warm custard pie -- definitely for dessert. Tanniny oakiness comes through hard at the finish. Really enjoyed this one.

Pours a clear copper-red color with nearly no head. Just a beautiful and unique color. Big oaky nose. Sticky mouthfeel. Not boozy at all. Fruity and oaky with some notes of vanilla.

Transfer from BA review on 8-9-12 - Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass - 2012 vintage Appearance – The beer is served an amber color with a thin-just off white head that fades fast to leave only a small amount of lacing. While leaving little lacing, the beer clings to the side of the glass upon swirling giving it a “thick” look. Smell – The aroma is heaviest to of sweet smells. Aromas of toffee, caramel, fruit (some dark and tropical) as well as aromas of vanilla and oak. These aroma overall, when mixed with some lighter biscuit, yeasty and boozy aromas make for one nice smelling brew. Taste – The taste hits sweet and hard. There is a huge taste of caramel and toffee with a lighter bready flavor upfront. Some flavors of vanilla and oak are present at the beginning. As time advances the oak and vanilla get stronger. The caramel and toffee that were huge in the beginning decline some with a up-surgence of some of the fruit flavors. More to toward the end a lighter yeasty flavor with a moderate boozy flavor come to the tongue. While there is a boozy flavor that does warm the tongue, it is less then would be expected for a 15 % abv + brew. Overall a sweet warming feel is left on the tongue. Delicious. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is thick and creamy with the carbonation level being on the lower side. Both are fantastic for accentuating the sweet, oaky and boozy flavors of the brew. Overall – Overall, it is sweet, flavorful, warming and delicious. This is definitely one to sit back and sip over a long conversation with a friend (or a stranger at a bar that can become a friend). Give it a go if you have the chance.

Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours orange brown with an attractive beige head and an ascerbic fruit and alcohol aroma. There is a sweet caramel malt flavor with a lot of dark fruit, oak and alcohol. A good sipper.

Awesome oak aroma! Smells like a room full of oak casks. Pours thick with a dark caramel color. Malty flavor with notes of caramel with woody highlights. Thick like a Barleywine but definitely a different flavor. Love it!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
