Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

The beer decamps the 12-ounce brown bottle a reddish-brown with a modest semi-creamy light tan head that disappears rather quickly leaving a fine covering of lace upon the glass. Nose is sweet and sour, hints of Oak, caramel, malt, and of course, a bit of fusel alcohol, a pleasant sniff for sure, start is quite sweet, the malt profile pleasant, the top moderate in feel. Finish has a stern acidity with a nice hop spiciness, quite dry and slightly tart aftertaste and yes, a bit of alcohol bitterness, certainly a belly warmer, but at 14.5 percent alcohol, not as brutal as “The Beast”, and I am sure it will age gracefully.

Bottle@Home. Complex aroma with leather, oak, vanilla and raisin. Orange/red color, small beige head, good lace. Very sweet, bitter, raisin, caramel, vanilla and pepper. Sticky and syrupy. Complex, nice balance, overwhelming flavors.

Bottle. Batch 2. Rich ruby-amber beer with a nice off-white head. Sweet oaky caramel malt aroma with some raisins and dates. Sweet dcaramel malt flavor with raisin and strawberry/cherry fruitiness. brown sugar, toffee, and light oak. Lingering fruity sweetness. A bit too sweet, but hides alcohol well. Richer bodied.

Aroma is smoke, rich candied malt. Hazy orange, pours a tiny white head, leaves a slight film on the side of the glass. Taste still has a slight smokiness, with fine malt, treacle and butterscotch. Full bodied, well blanced, tongue is "treating itself like an amusement park." Had this for about three years, Great stuff!

Very odd aroma of sweet cheese and honey. The pour is a darker orange with a thinnish white head. The flavor is sweet oak hops. not quite syrupy. But very full bodied. The flavor is highlighted with sweet vanilla. Very interesting, not an easy drink, but very much worth the money.

12 oz bottle. bottled in 2005.
Hazy amber, very thin head. Alcohol coats the glass.
Aroma is sweet with notes of melon, apple, honey, apricot. Wood is there but very faint.
Flavor was sweet. Port, vanilla, sugar, gooey caramel, honey. Just enough oaky tannins to keep it from becoming cloying.
Liquid desert. I think I killed my sweet-tooth for the month.
