COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate.

This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Kind of feels and tastes like honey. Syrupy consistency with a sweet-like aftertaste that masks the alc% well. Overall not a beer I would drink again.

On tap pours a deep copper color. Aroma is oak, caramel, dark fruits. Taste sweet oak, caramel, sweet malt. A sipper but quite smooth!

12oz bottle to snifter. Dark copper pour. I left a lot of sediment behind in the bottle. Huge sugary malt bomb. Creamy head with great retention.

>> Tea amber pour with webby lacing. Marked as 16.9% abv, holy... 16.9. Nose is butterscotch, bourbon, fumey, intense. Taste plastic, extreme sugar, butterscotch, type 2 diabetes. Really boozy. No thank you.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2014 12 oz bottle. 2014 vintage. Pours a dark copper color with moderate head but lots of chunky white sediment. Aromas of maple syrup, caramel, sweet malts, oranges and spruce. Big sweet caramel malty flavors with a little subtle hoppiness. Chewy and sticky. Warm (not a surprise at 14+%). Really nice for this style though not to look at.

"bottled 4/08 batch 4. a day later, and i still don’t know what to think. possibly the most extreme beer i’ve ever had (easily so for a barleywine). The vanilla oakiness hits your nose hard when poured, along with a unique quality that wasn’t at first altogether pleasing, although it got better as it breathed. this added aspect of the aroma was labeled "what the hell is that?" "garbage" and "cabbage". The funny thing is, all 3 of those people liked the beer, although it was too much for a couple palates. while i prefer the hoppier, and relatively balanced, Hog Heaven, this was a unique brew, with a great body, and a heavy but smooth vanilla/caramel/oak, oak, oak and more oak flavor. it would make a great after dinner sipper on a cold night. For the BEST of the extreme beers, though, I have to want more, and after this one I was ready to move on. I may possibly revisit a future release, but i like the other 2 "demon" ales better."

Barreras (1026) - Diamond Bar, California, USA - OCT 2, 2014
Pours a light copper color with an alcohol and vanilla aroma. Taste is potent, almost liquer like with the bourbon and oak cask flavor hitting your palate with every drink. For 14.2% alcohol, this beer is smooth and the alcohol level is hidden well. Reminds me of Jagermeister, the beer gets better as it warms to room temperature.

This was almost mead-like. Sweet aromas and flavors of honey, toffee, coffee, dark fruit and wood. Warming and slightly boozy. Pours a vibrant amber color with a big frothy white head. Medium bodied, but on the heavier side. Very nice beer, definitely a sipper.
