COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samaelís Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer weíve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate.

This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our ďDemons of Ale SeriesĒ.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

(Batch 6; Bottled in March 2010) This starts with a boozy nose, a touch of oak, and some fruit in the aroma. It pours a clear ruby red, with a full off-white head. The flavor is intense, a strong blast of oak and vanilla, with a sweet finish. This is a hot beer, and the alcohol is noticeable in the warming sensation as you swallow. A nice sipping beer on a chilly, wet spring day. Next time Iím out of state, Iíll be picking up some more of this.

This was almost mead-like. Sweet aromas and flavors of honey, toffee, coffee, dark fruit and wood. Warming and slightly boozy. Pours a vibrant amber color with a big frothy white head. Medium bodied, but on the heavier side. Very nice beer, definitely a sipper.

Draft sample at Central City. Listed as 16.9% ABV. Pours a deep, clear amber with a thick, tight khaki head that leaves a dripping wall of lace. Nose involves an initial blast of mint, with robust malt, candied orange, light chocolate, earth, cinnamon, toasted malt, and alcohol vapors. Really sweet, kind of bitter but not nearly in balance. Full bodied, thick, quite oily, soft carb, warming on the way down, with a long herbal, minty toward mouthwash finish. A really intense brew with lots of layers, many of which Iím sure I missed. Awesome to try.

Pours a very red amber, lots of head but settled rather quickly. Aroma is big and noticeable immediately upon cracking - oak, caramel and booze. Taste is sweet caramel and vanilla, oak and fig with boozy heat but dangerously drinkable. Very good.

MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: sweet, caramel, sugary, lots of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, some banana, sweet malts. Aftertaste: sugary, sweet, caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, more vanilla, more chocolate, raisins, some alcohol. Man, this is good stuff!!!

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2014 12 oz 2009 bottle. First time trying this beer so I donít know if it is past itís peak but it is certainly a great beer. Slightly sweet, slightly oaky, and fabulously rich, this brew has an excellent balance of flavors. High 16.4% ABV is nicely hidden -- drinks like a ~9% ale.

ACHops (695) - Seattle, Washington, USA - SEP 2, 2014
On tap @ Uber. Barleywines are not my thing, but had to try this one... listed here as 15.5%. Pours dark caramel with medium creamy off-white head. Aroma is boozy roasty caramel malt, with strong notes of rye and bourbon. Taste is super sweet thick caramel malt, lots of vanilla and oak, lingers syrupy sweet on the finish. Rich toffee and dark caramel mid-palate. Opens up a bit as it warms. Huge beer, the booze and sweetness permeates. I donít think Iíve ever said this (and maybe itís the Samaelís talking...), but it seems like the sugar and abv could be reeled back a bit and this would still have the same great flavor profile. I dunno. Iíd have another.
