Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Bottled sample at tasting in Gothenburg, april 2009. Overall: Very sweet and powerful with some coconut (!) notes, oak, and vanilla. Warming alcohol. Fullbodied. It’s a bit too much, even for me.

2006 12 oz. bottle. Poured clear deep amber. Small head w/ large bubbles. Aroma is of sweet and dark fruit, fig, dates, and malt. Flavor is oaky, high caramel, slighly vinous. Only slight alcohol warmth in the finish, surprisingly low for this abv. Very good, but a bit too heavy on the caramel to drink any more than a few ounces at a time.

Huge, intimidating stout. Intense syrupy bourbon, in the class of bourbon county and dark lord. The bourbon isn’t as forward as those two, but still this is a big, complex and roasty beer.

Bottle from April 2009, batch 5. Pours mostly clear dark copper, some very small particulates, with a one-finger beige head, very fine and lasting lacing. Aromas of alcohol, toast, vanilla, wood, and grass. Full body, sharp, hot, and zesty. Sweet and chewy, with flavors of toasted barley, caramel, cherry, pepper, oak, and grass. Has a sharp, almost citric aftertaste, with just a hint of bitterness.

Definitely a sipping beer. The aroma is that of barley, dried fruits, and delicious alcohol. The color is dark brown with reddish tints. It hits your tounge and literally explodes. The oak chips really stand out in this one. Drink with caution.

oooohhh baby. this be one fine assed beer. mmm hmm. yessir. Pour was nothing special with just a so-so smallish off white head. Color is a lovely, rich, clear medium amber. Aroma is surprisingly mildly malty and hoppy. Flavor is where this sweet little dog knocks my socks off. Boom! Wild combination of characteristics: really hoppy, really malty sweet, lots of oak, and some spicy hot something or other. Body is luscious and carbonation in tune. Finish is sultry and leaves me with a come-on for another decadent sip. Have I sold my soul? who cares. good beer though.

Clear orange. Short-lived creamy light brown head. Cask wood, pear, caramel and lemon juice on the nose. Initially sweet, bitterness and alcohol is quickly felt and lasts all the way to the finish. A full bodied drink, it’s softly carbonated and syrupy. Vintage 2006 (Bottle, courtesy of tarjei 12.12.2009)

A: Nice dark chestnut red in color with a two finger head and lot of floaties. S: Lots of Oak, and Booze, some nice maltiness to smooth it out a bit. T: Holy Smokes this is a huge beer. Very sweet with tons of oakiness. There is a nice malty flavor with a nice balance of hops. This is smooth like Bourbon with a nice alcohol burn. In fact if you take away the sweetness you would think you were drinking Bourbon, strong Bourbon did I mention the booze. The ABV (15%) in this one is front and center. M: Medium light carbonation.

Vanilla, oak, and barley blend to smell like a fresh brownie. Ruby/amber hue with thin tan head. Vanilla, maple, caramel, oak, walnut tones are abundant with a nice warming alcohol finish. Dangerously good. Notes: Bottle was about 3 yrs old
