3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DavoleBomb (1389) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 20, 2012Poured into a snifter. Batch #8.
4.5 A: Lightly hazed plum color. Two fingers of beige, frothy/creamy head. Retention is very good given the ABV. A decent sized ring of lacing is left. Some small yeasties throughout.
4.0 S: Strong toffee, caramel, and fruits. Banana is the strongest followed by plum, well, sugar plums, followed by figs and candied oranges. Oak and maple syrup. Brown sugar and pickled beets. Spicy yeast. Boozy, but as expected.
3.5 T: Taste encompasses all of the components of the nose. The strongest are banana, caramel, sugar plum and candied orange, spice from the yeast, figs, and brown sugar. Super sweet with a formitable booziness. It’s tasty and superbly complex, but it’s too damn sweet to enjoy all 12 oz.
3.5 M: Heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Booze leaves a bit of harshness in the feel and the sweetness is a bit cloying. I’d prefer this to be a bit drier with the booze better hidden.
3.5 D: This is too sweet and boozy for me, but it was worth a try.

2006 bottle in 5/13. Age did this one well. Pours translucent brown with little carbonation, no head. Smooth, sweet, with flavors of chocolate, toffee, anise, dark fruit, and more and more and more...finishes dry and very satisfying.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jcos (1176) - Maryland, USA - MAY 13, 2013
Location/Date:2006 Bottle split with Dave on 5/12/2013.
Appearance: Pours an opaque brown.
Aroma: Aroma of oak, caramel.
Taste: Really malt forward, caramel, some kid of dark fruit, oaky, faint vanilla.
Palate:Medium body, quick aftertaste.
Summary: I bet many of Avery’s crazy abv beers could use age on them - this one was 7 years old and tasty. I don’t have the patience to follow through with that for other beers, but maybe one day.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Brouwerij (414) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Bottle thanks to Alemax. Pours a burnt copper with minimal head. Settles almost immediately with no lacing. Aroma is oaky, mild bourbon, caramel, vanilla, fruity, pear, with significant alcohol. Flavor is sweet and oaky up front, followed by tones of vanilla, caramel, and more oak. Slightly bitter, oaky aftertaste that lingers. Quite sweet throughout. Surprisingly palatable despite the high alcohol content, Avery truly is the master of big beers. Soft carbonation, medium to full body, smooth texture, and a warming mouthfeel and finish. An excellent, strong, sweet, malty beer. One hell of a barleywine.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 _angst_ (1745) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - MAY 8, 2013
355 ml bottle courtesy of Marsiblursi. Batch 2, 2006 vintage. Many thanks! Pours clear copper with no head worth mentioning. Smell is sweet, slightly oxidized and intense with caramel, toffee, alcohol, vanilla, leather, raisins in rum, prunes, figs, cookie dough, vanilla fudge, charred wood, orange zest, roasted coconut and hints of pine needles, roasted hazelnuts and resin. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter, very tiny fruity tart and malty with caramel, toffee, alcohol, wood, vanilla fudge, prunes, raisins, figs, brandy, coconut, english fruit cake, leather, roasted nuts and hints of pine needles and resin. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, boozy, round and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and tiny fruity tart with caramel, toffee, figs, raisins, prunes, cherries in brandy, cookie dough, charred wood, roasted nuts and pine needles. A huge beer that has matured nicely. Would be interesting to try a newer vintage for comparison.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 VsXsV (1225) - Linköping, SWEDEN - APR 13, 2013
Bottle. Hazy red copper liquid with minimal off-white head. Aroma of toast, caramel, toffee, wood, vanilla, booze, bread, dark fruit and grain. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of booze, grain, dark fruit, caramel, toffee and woody vanilla. Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Quite nice but quite boozy because of the high ABV.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 womencantsail (6902) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - APR 9, 2013
Draft @ Oakquinox 2013. Hazed orange pour with a white head. Good oak aroma, vanilla, and a moderate alcohol note. Good fruit character of orange, pear, and apple. Hints of pineapple, some spice, vanilla, and brown sugar. The flavor is nice and sweet. Brown sugar, caramel, and plenty of fruit. Pineapple on the finish with some orange and pear. Good oak and vanilla, some alcohol, and a touch of pine.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 keanex (787) - Atco, New Jersey, USA - APR 4, 2013
Bottled April 2012
Appearance: The body is crystal clear with a copper to a mahogany hue. The head is this with poor retention, quickly settling into a light coating.
Aroma: The aroma is complex with sugar, oak, sweet malts, vanilla and only light booze. The aroma leans sweet with good strength.
Taste: This is a sweet and big beer. Flavors of oak, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, caramel and booze on the finish. This is really well balanced, especially for the ABV.
Palate: Thick with light carbonation, though the carbonation is a bit hard.
Overall: I enjoy this. It’s a nice barleywine with good balance and a nice warming sensation. I’ve had lower alcohol barleywines that were less balanced than this.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 adamjackson (1230) - Lyme, New Hampshire, USA - MAR 31, 2013
2006 vintage, cellar temp. produced 1 finger head but faded pretty fast. Burnt oak is the best way to descirbe the appearance. I can smell corn sugar and oak from 2 feet away. IT has this citrus nose along with the oak. Wow. Taste is pretty impressive. Cheap candy sweetness followed by vanilla and tangerine. Finish is all oak and holy crap, I just realize this is a 15% beer. How can that be? It has no booziness at all. Impressive.
