COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sui Generis, which is #2 in our new Barrel-Aged Series, will debut at the Avery Tap Room on Wednesday, September 23rd from 3-8 PM. Due to extremely limited quantities of this brew (<150 cases will be produced), 12oz. single bottles will be sold only at the Avery Tap Room, between 3 PM and 8 PM on September 23rd. Sui Generis is a complex ale, aged and artfully blended from several types of oak barrels, and displays a delightful lactic sourness complimented by hints of brett, oak, and acetic. Intricate yet bold, deeply complex yet surprisingly refreshing, Sui Generis was crafted in the tradition of perennial Tap Room favorites De Vogelbekdieren and Voltron.
A blend of ales from 39% Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, 35% Chardonnay barrels, 13% Port barrels and 13% Bourbon barrels.

Pours cloudy yeasty golden yellow-orange with light lacing. Smells of sweet perfume with a distinct tartness. Tastes like a Sweet Tart but without a lot of the "sweet"...kinda fruity but very sour. Light carbonation.

12 oz. bottle purchased at the Avery Tap Room in Boulder, CO (purchased September 2009). This review replaces my initial tasting on release day at a pre-GABF party. Pours muddy orange with a huge champagne-like off-white head. The aroma is tart lemon with hints of oak. The flavor is wonderfully sour with some tart cherry and lemon rind. Thankfully there is none of the apple cider vinegar flavor often associated with sour ales. Not that it is always bad but the fact that this steers clear of that is welcome and gives me a better overall impression. I’m not sure that this is any better than it was a year ago but it certainly has held up well. An outstanding achievement from Avery.

Bottle. Pours a sort of pinkish hued brown color absent of any sediment. Has a nice big fluffy white head that laces on the glass as the head settles. Lots of wine type aromas in the nose; grapes and barrels with some sour/tart notes. The taste is tart upfront that then transitions to some medicinal Brett flavors with an overall flavor of Chardonnay. Light mouthfeel with just a touch of too much carbonation. Not bad, ends cleanly.

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a thin lazing beige head. The aroma has notes over ripe fruits, malt, caramel, and straw. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of berries as well as medium notes of straw, malt, and wood, leading to a dry finish.

[ A gem from Grant ].Clear medium red - amber red color with a small large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, tart berry, wood, light to moderate yeasty, US brett yeast, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light moderate acidic with a long duration, tart, berry, caramel, dry dry. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. I was expecting a little bit more. [20100825]

Bottle shared by DuffmanSW. Poured a murky golden color with white head. Aroma was funky, grapes, and oak. Taste was tart and sour, with some oak presence, wine, and charred cherries. Nice carbonation. Overall very tasty.

A: The pour is a slightly hazy amber/copper color with a fluffy off-white head that sticks nicely to the sides of the glass. S: A very pleasant aroma, indeed. Good lactic tartness, cherries, apples, and slightly vinous. A mild oak and funk to the beer, but fairly yeasty and "bretty". T: The tartness is noticeable right away, but it’s not overly sour in any way. The fruit flavors are there, especially the cherries with some lemon character as well. Good barrel/wood flavor and a subtle mustiness to it. M: The body is medium with a very lively and high level of carbonation. The finish is quite dry. D: I was surprised to see that this beer was so high in alcohol, as it definitely is not noticeable. Great flavors and aromas, I would happily drink this one again.
