A bottle opened at a friends party by an unknown party, then promptly left behind by them because it was too strong. Nice to find 16oz of something yummy like this. Pour is nearly black with tan head. Nose is rich sweet with malty sharpness. Flavor is lots of chocolate and molasses. Creamy rich toffee sweetness. Warming and smooth. Not bitter. Rich full flavor and mouthfeel.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Dfonorow (590) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JAN 12, 2012
On tap at Rattle N Hum, 2009 version. Pour is sold black with a very small tan head. Lacing is pretty good for an IRS and leaves a nice cascading effect on the glass. Aroma is extremely heavy on the malts - molasses, dark overripe plums, and some slight licorice. The flavor is much like the aroma but with a solid hoppy dry finish. The taste is actually sweeter than the aroma, but not too overwhelming.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Reynolds314 (758) - Connecticut, USA - JAN 10, 2012
Really great stuff. The pour is quite dark with a nice dark head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, ash. Taste is very roasty and moderately bitter but the finish is still quite smooth.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 MBrausen (69) - Minnesota, USA - JAN 10, 2012
Poured from a bomber into a Surly Darkness sniffer.
A- Color was a nice black, with a light cream head. The head was pretty minimal. Even for a bottle beer, I usually like to see a thicker head in a RIS.
S. Smells of sweet fruit, with light chocolate hints. A very basic smell. Not a lot to it.
T. There is an instant overwhelming sour and bitterness. It really overshadowing everything else. A slight cherry flavor, mild alcohol flavor.
M. It’s very coarse on the tongue, and very dry. Chewy and almost flat feeling
O. This is a pretty big disappointment for me. I’ve had Avery before, and very much liked them. But this was just a loss for me. It doesn’t have any of the traits I expect in a RIS. It tastes more along the line of a sour than an IS. Just not what I was looking for.

Bottle. Pours black with a small, beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, ripe dark fruits and chocolate. Slightly sweet flavor with notes of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and dark fruit. Some alcohol in the flavor also. Strange hoppy but salty finish.

Aroma of dark fruit, sweet toffee, and a good chocolate. Pours black with a white head. Tastes a little crazy. Hint of licorice with overall chocolate toffee. Like most Avery beers, a little strong tasting.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Scubatrip (559) - Annandale, Virginia, USA - JAN 1, 2012
From the bomber bottle, pours oil black with a thin tan head. Aroma is sweetly malty and creamy. Taste is thick, alcohol, creamy, milky, everyone else has already extolled the virtues of this beer. Thumbs up.

Pours near black with a quick, thin brown head. Nose is raisins, light coffee, caramel, and some hops. Flavor is much more coffee-rich and quite well balanced, with moderate bitter hops, a little fruit, and a touch of alcohol. Finish is moderate and a bit chocolaty. Not a stand out but a good imperial stout.
