Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

not mind blowing but good. Aroma is bakers chocolate, figs, hints of vine. Pours black with thin head and red edges, taste is sweet and kind of lacks complexity, missing bitterness, deep roast coffee, toffees, caramels, sugars. mostly just bakers chocolate and a sweetness. Palate is a bit thinner than I’d like overall it’s good but better can be found pretty easily.

From a 22oz bottle that I paid $3 for.... because SE 14th Hy-Vee was magical for like one weekend.
Pours the darkest of browns with a medium sized head that’s well retained, but doesn’t have much lace production.

The aroma is dark fruit and some leafy hops. It’s got a big roastiness and a lot of sweet maltiness. There is some dark chocolate aroma that dominates as the beer warms and there’s a reasonable bit of alcohol on the nose too.

The flavor is pleasantly bitter with a big (but not out of control) sweetness throughout. It’s got roasty malt and dark chocolate bitterness. It’s got some toffee and leafy hoppiness with a good bit of alcohol warmth.

Originally sampled on 12/8/08. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts and slight hints of cherries. Appearance was dark black body mid sized light tan cap. Good mouthfeel, creamy and it had a little thickness. Flavors were o.k. nothing outstanding, and it was a little sweet. Overall it was a decent imp. stout.

November 2015 batch #14 bomber. 10.1% abv. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate and licorice, maybe some Quik powdered chocolate. Flavor is dark chocolate, dark fruit (cherries, etc.), bourbon, caramel. Tasty.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 16 ounce bottle. Appearance: pours black with a brown, tan head. Aroma: Smell of dark fruit and some cocoa, slight booziness detectable as it warms. Taste: sweet and malty with rich dark fruits carrying the middle and some sweet breadiness at the close. Palate: medium with relatively high carbonation. Overall: dynamic malt flavors with just enough hop bitterness to give it edge.

Tap. Thick, fine, tan head on black. Dull and cloudy. Fruity nose, berries, chocolate, marmalade, cola. Rich flavor, fruit and umami, miso, citrus. Noble hops, chocolate, vanilla. Weird stuff, a bit like stanky natto.

Batch No. 14 November 2015 10.1% Pours black with a thin tan head. The aroma is heavy. It has chocolate, whiskey, cherry, licorice, and hints of coffee, with the whiskey and cherry standing out most. The taste is sweet and very boozy. Here I find the noted whiskey, along with chocolate, vanilla, spices (Belgian?), cherry, mild coffee, and a touch of raisin. The aftertaste is a long lasting combination of chocolate, vanilla, and alcohol. This is heavy in body, has a thick texture, and has minimal carbonation. This is a good heavy stout, though I believe I might like it better if it wasn’t so sweet. The portrait of Tsar Nicholas II on the bottle is cool.
