frankenkitty (1789), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Apr 1, 2005 A deep, deep red/black body with a full, oily brown head that left very nice lacing. This beer made no hesitation in presenting it’s 13% prominently in the aroma. Additional fruity scents of plum, peach, apple and cherry (although not sour) and touches of sweet chocolate... like a chocolate covered cherry. Flavor was immensely rich and held a heady sweetness along with malt-masked hops, milk chocolate and some bitter coffee notes, the only problem was that the alcohol was too dominant... akin to drinking hard liquor. Burned my tongue and warmed my belly. Finish was dry yet syrupy. Very good, and one of these lasted me most of the night.

Really nice beer JCB (1001), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 2006 batch from The Good Beer Store, Chapel Hill (RIP). Black like the darkest winter night, a sludgy motor oil pour. Just like I like it, almost like espresso as an alcohol delivery system. Still quite hoppy like the rest of Avery’s big beers (Cascade, maybe?). But it works to complement the overall deeply roasty quality of this brew. It’s a bit sticky in the middle, but that’s almost unavoidable with this kind of style I suppose. Hints of anise complement the coffee and chocolate malt flavors too. Pours a deep black with a nice creamy brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits. Flavor is creamy bitter chocolate, burnt coffee, dark fruits, caramel, slightly boozy. Decent mouthfeel, (I hate thin impy stouts) I enjoyed this one quite a bit. nimbleprop (581), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 7, 2008 22oz bomber from the 2005 vintage tasted at my first imperial stout tasting. Pours a flat, watery black with very low carbonation and a thin white head. Aroma of vanilla, oak and brown sugar. Flavors are the same with some nuttiness, a touch of coffee, some toast and a bit of dark chocolate. Creamy on the tongue with a lot of heat from the alcohol dominating the palate. Looks like its aging alright.
