COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

[Vintage 2003 - sampled 2005] An almost opaque brown beer with a dense brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of coffe and chocolate, but also some caramel. The flavor is very powerful with strong notes of alcohol and Cascade hops to begin with, but then coffee and chocolate on a very sweet background and with the alcohol lingering in the background, and the end is quite dry with a combination of roasted malt and bitterness, but still with the alcohol making its presence know. Nice.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2006 (Bottle 65 cl) Completely black and opaque with a small, rough, off-white head. Vinous, sweetish malt aroma. Medium-bodied, sweetish alcoholic with lots of roasted malt ans notes of dried fruit. Discreet, hoppy finish. Quite lovely. 030606

From 1 pt 6 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a dense chocolate brown head diminishing to a nce lacework. Aroma is mild roasted, chocolate and light hoppy. Flavour Light roasted malt, chocolate (dominantly) and light liqourice note before a solid hops flavour appears and nicely breaking the dense dark flavours. Sweet flavoured with a distinct caramel to light sugarish note. Smooth mouthfeel and the 11.7% are amazingly well hidden. Nice and balanced brew yet doesn’t have the subtle complexities of the top 50 imp stouts.

Appearance: solid black, whispy tan head
Aroma: sweet chocolate aroma
Flavor: big flavor with alternating roasted malt and alcohol, a sour under current, ripe fruit fighting its way to the surface but being held back by the bitter finish, the sourness eventually fades but not before it ruins the beer, og 1100, 70ibu

rich sweet chocolate flavor with light roasted and balancing bitterness, hint of alcohol, the house fusels are well hidden by the chocolate and roast, none of the sourness from the last sample, lots of licorish sweetness, much better showing

Black color, with a generous creamy head; when pouring, it doesn’t seem very thick, there’s even a fizzy sound. It has a sweetish phenolic aroma at first, then some cookies and dark chocolate. It has an average body strength (i.e., less than other Imperial Stouts); it’s still sweetish, without being cloying, with a strong caramel flavor and just some dark chocolate; the bitterness is much attenuated, difficult to feel the 70 IBU; in the end there is a small alcohol perception. For being sweetish, with lower bitterness than the average, and with less roasted malt, it’s an easy Imperial Stout to drink.

2004-01-10, bottled 2002, 2 years old, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Dark amber color. As expected, the usual caramel/liquorice/roasted malt in the aroma and flavor. Thanks Philippe (Bov) for sharing this bottle.
