Commercial Description:
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

Very boozy smelling. Solid mouthfeel, slightly creamy. Has some spicy peppery notes to it, roasted chocolate, but reminds me unfortunately of soy sauce. A little salty even. This becomes more prevalent as the beer warms. Good, but not great.

On tap. Blackish-brown with beige head. Cocoa-malty nose. Mild coffee and chocolate flavor, smooth, with a warming boozy touch and dark-chocolate bitterness. Damned enjoyable... Not all that complex I thought, but very tasty and drinkable for its strength.

2007 bomber. near total black color with a thick tan head that disappears quickly. not much in the way of lacing. nose is sharp - sweet toffee, caramel, leather, dark fruits, spice and molasses. relatively thin palate (for what I was expecting anyway). taste is candied sweetness mixed with chocolate and coffee. there’s an astringent quality to it as well. good balanced heat from the alcohol. I liked this better as it warmed up, but a little sweet for my imp stout tastes. K-6.5

Pours thick and black with a tan head that disappears. Aroma is chocolate, molasses and ripe fruit. Taste is of dark overripe fruit, a little chocolate and sugar. Bitter hoppy aftertaste with a bit of lingering sweetness and some boozy warmth.

2007 bottle: Pours a maple brown with a little light brown head that rings the glass. Aroma of caramel, light nuts, brown sugar, and coffee. Very sweet maple sugar taste at first with a little coffee and a slightly roasty, nutty, woody alcohol finish. Slightly thin in the body, but a deep flavor palate

(USA) Pours a nice black color with a dissipating sm-tan head. Aroma is of toffee and molasses with a slight bitter chocolate / dark fruit taste. The alcohol is present, The 11.04% will sneak up on you !!! The mouthfeel is simi thick and kinda creamy. Not bad at all, Avery has some nice beers.
