rustychiles (418), Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 12, 2008 22oz bomber of the 2006 batch.
Pours a deep black with a nice creamy brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits. Flavor is creamy bitter chocolate, burnt coffee, dark fruits, caramel, slightly boozy. Decent mouthfeel, (I hate thin impy stouts) I enjoyed this one quite a bit. nimbleprop (570), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 7, 2008 22oz bomber from the 2005 vintage tasted at my first imperial stout tasting. Pours a flat, watery black with very low carbonation and a thin white head. Aroma of vanilla, oak and brown sugar. Flavors are the same with some nuttiness, a touch of coffee, some toast and a bit of dark chocolate. Creamy on the tongue with a lot of heat from the alcohol dominating the palate. Looks like its aging alright. craftycarl21 (174), South Hero, Vermont, USA Aug 4, 2008 near black pour, slight red transparency visible in light. Strong, unwavering tan head presides. Aroma is strong with malt and bitter chocolate, also some hops. Flavor was complex, with different variations of malt and hops that made it a very great beer, plus the high alcohol content. Palate was solid, really nice brew. 17thfloor (637), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 4, 2008 [2007 Bottle] Pours near black with a small creamy beige head. Big sweet raisin, varnish, licorice aroma with notes of alcohol. Flavor is a bit metallic, lots of sweet raisins, varnish, some creamy chocolate, a tiny bit woody, candy sweetness, dark fruits, vinous, some licorice and definite German hops. Finishes dry with notes of coffee and chocolate, alcohol, licorice. Smooth syrupy body with fine tingly carbonation. The big hoppiness really adds the character. derekbang (100), Indiana, USA Aug 2, 2008 Pour opaque black with frothy head that persists. Good lacing but mouthfeel was thinner than what I view as the great IRS’s. Aroma was mostly fruity and flavor was rather sweet, fruity, touch of honey/caramel was apparent. This was a 2004 bottle and was still somewhat "hot" - alcohol was fairly noticeable, although not surprising since it is 13% ABV. That being said, Dark Lord isn’t far off from that level and no such heat shines through. Decent IRS but there are many others that are better.
