Commercial Description:
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

Bottled in 2007. Dark brown with small head an no lacing. Oily mouthfeel. Sweet, sharp aroma with a little caramel notes. Flavor has a little cocoa, caramel, roastyness with very sweet fruits. nice hops, actually very good hops. I love the hallerau. Big alcohol burn but it feels so good. Rather light and easy drinking besides the alcohol. Would have liked it a little more complex and thicker. Pretty good overall.

(USA) Pours a nice black color with a dissipating sm-tan head. Aroma is of toffee and molasses with a slight bitter chocolate / dark fruit taste. The alcohol is present, The 11.04% will sneak up on you !!! The mouthfeel is simi thick and kinda creamy. Not bad at all, Avery has some nice beers.

This is good stuff. Big fan of Avery - sampled for the first at the Avery beer dinner @ Jose Pistola’s (Philly), this re-rate is from the bottle. Pours blackest brown, thin brown head. Smells dark! I don’t know how else to emphasize it. Charred wood, bitter chocolate, anise, chicory and liquorice. Taste is equally as strong, but a little sweeter - chocolate and roasted malts. Finish is spicy and bitter, then the alcohol jumps out and kicks you in the shin. Woah! I like it like that.

2006 in 22oz. Milk chocolate sticks out the most. Some hops are still noticeable. Some good malt bitterness comes through in the finish. Palate is thick and creamy but a fair amount of alcohol comes through.

2007 batch in a 22 oz bottle from Binny’s. Aroma: Very light and fruity smell for a stout. Sweet and citrusy with some candy and molasses. Appearance: Dark, inky black. Light tan, two finger head that dies quickly. Flavor: Lighter than anticipated for such a high ABV. Still relatively thick. Well built and complex. Solid taste that hangs around. Toffee flavor. Mocha and fig. A little chocolate finish. Palate: Light on the tongue, but thich and chewy. Very smooth and flat. Gooey and creamy. Overall: Great sipping stout for such a high ABV. Not the best imperial I’ve had, but still very good.

Stouts are not my favorite style but I could get used to this. Creamy head, toffee undertones, very smooth. One of the best Imperial stouts that I have had in a long time. Keep up the strong work Avery.
