SQNfan (436), Wheaton, Illinois, USA May 1, 2008 This poured black in color and immediately I smelled chocolate chip oatmeal cookies with walnuts. A very cookie like smell! The palate was also sweet but it seemd a bit fake. Full-bodied but dry with a hoppy finish. This came off a bit disjointed and I wonder if it just needs some time to smooth out.
JCB (1001), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 2006 batch from The Good Beer Store, Chapel Hill (RIP). Black like the darkest winter night, a sludgy motor oil pour. Just like I like it, almost like espresso as an alcohol delivery system. Still quite hoppy like the rest of Avery’s big beers (Cascade, maybe?). But it works to complement the overall deeply roasty quality of this brew. It’s a bit sticky in the middle, but that’s almost unavoidable with this kind of style I suppose. Hints of anise complement the coffee and chocolate malt flavors too. Rich and delicious. joeymacaroni (83), West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 24, 2008 sampled @ State Line. pours dark black/ brown with a thin tan head. aroma is dark caramel, liquorice, and light dark fruits. taste is heavy anise/liquorice, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. nice and thick, creamy with slight oiliness. finish is an anise note that lingers nicely for a while. rustychiles (429), Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 12, 2008 22oz bomber of the 2006 batch.
Pours a deep black with a nice creamy brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits. Flavor is creamy bitter chocolate, burnt coffee, dark fruits, caramel, slightly boozy. Decent mouthfeel, (I hate thin impy stouts) I enjoyed this one quite a bit. nimbleprop (581), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 7, 2008 22oz bomber from the 2005 vintage tasted at my first imperial stout tasting. Pours a flat, watery black with very low carbonation and a thin white head. Aroma of vanilla, oak and brown sugar. Flavors are the same with some nuttiness, a touch of coffee, some toast and a bit of dark chocolate. Creamy on the tongue with a lot of heat from the alcohol dominating the palate. Looks like its aging alright. craftycarl21 (184), South Hero, Vermont, USA Aug 4, 2008 near black pour, slight red transparency visible in light. Strong, unwavering tan head presides. Aroma is strong with malt and bitter chocolate, also some hops. Flavor was complex, with different variations of malt and hops that made it a very great beer, plus the high alcohol content. Palate was solid, really nice brew.
