Commercial Description:
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

Bottle, 2006 vintage. Pours a not quite opaque black body with red hues and generous light brown head. Aroma of cocoa, coffee, light floral hops, dark fruit, and a hint of anise. Mouthfeel is light for an imperial stout, but smooth and easy to drink. Flavors of sweet, roasted malts and mocha on the front of the palate, then finishing to cocoa, toffee, and raisin flavors. Slight hops in the finish and aftertaste.

The bottle looks good, but I don’t like those pictures on it. The beer in the glass is deep black. Starts malty and dry. Finish almost sweet. Notes of liquorice. Not as scratchy as other Imperial Stouts. Good one! Thanks to Kaggie97 for the bottle!

2005 Batch. Black with a good thick greyish head. Powerful aroma of coffee, roasted malts, black chocolate and alcohol. A full bodied bastard this is - supplying loads of roastiness, chocolate, bitter hops , alcohol and coffee.

2006 batch from The Good Beer Store, Chapel Hill (RIP). Black like the darkest winter night, a sludgy motor oil pour. Just like I like it, almost like espresso as an alcohol delivery system. Still quite hoppy like the rest of Avery’s big beers (Cascade, maybe?). But it works to complement the overall deeply roasty quality of this brew. It’s a bit sticky in the middle, but that’s almost unavoidable with this kind of style I suppose. Hints of anise complement the coffee and chocolate malt flavors too. Rich and delicious.

sampled @ State Line. pours dark black/ brown with a thin tan head. aroma is dark caramel, liquorice, and light dark fruits. taste is heavy anise/liquorice, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. nice and thick, creamy with slight oiliness. finish is an anise note that lingers nicely for a while.
