4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Vertical tasting at Avery tap room for release of Czar Imperial Stout 2009. I rated 2007, 2008, and 2009 all on tap. I’ll list all of them because of the notable differences.
Czar 2007 pours sticky and black with beige head. Aroma is sweet candy with caramel and coffee, with classic Avery malt backbone. Flavor is sweet roasted, dark chocolate, with light fruit, light citrus, and a taste of very burnt bread roll. Finish is long and very bitter.
Aroma-8, Appearance-4, Flavor-8, Palate-3, Overall-15, Total Score- 3.8
Czar 2008 pours not as thick as other two. Still black with beige head. Aroma very boozy, toffee candy adds ton of sweetness. Lighter texture visibly and on tongue than 07 and 09. Flavor is thick molasses chalked full of sugar and cream like in coffee.
Aroma-7, Appearance-4, Flavor-8, Palate-3, Overall-15, Total score- 3.7
Czar 2009 pours black with thicker beige head. Aroma is dark rich toasted coffee notes, alcohol, and sweeter syrupy sweetness. Flavor is molasses, burnt notes covered by candy sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden with finish thicker, sticky, and ends smooth and balanced. Leaves coffee bite and chocolate lingering. Very Rich beer.
Aroma-8, Appearance-5, Flavor-8, Palate-4, Overall-16, Total score- 4.1
Must note, these three are very rich. Also note worthy, I enjoyed all these beers with ratman197. The rating entered above, in official rating, is the 2009 Czar and the ratings under each years description uses the same scoring system.

Batch N°12, octobre 2013. 10.3%.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black with ruby highlights. Has half a finger of khaki head that dissipates quickly and leaves little lacing. Aroma of light chocolate and mild coffee. Taste has a big alcohol character with some dark fruit, minimal coffee, a hint of soy sauce and some hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is semi full with moderate carbonation. Not at all what I expected or wanted from this stout. Would have liked more typical chocolate and coffee flavors and much less booze. Extremely disappointed.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A: Roasted malt and dark, dried fruits are the dominant aroma. Very faint hints of sweet chocolate follow and maybe a whisper of coffee.
A: Pours black with a two-and-a-half-finger, tan, creamy head that lasted several minutes. Great lacing.
T: A deep roast flavor with chocolate and toffee. Virtually no bitterness present though. Faint coffee with a warming alcohol finish.
P: Medium to full bodied with just the right level of carbonation.
O: A wonderful representation of the style, it is a nice, flavorful imperial stout with great booze heat that feels a bit thinner and less substantial than many, but World Class in every other regard.

Coffee black with a thin, tan head. Smells like I’m getting an uppercut from someone clinching coffee beans, cocoa beans, and molasses in their fist. Flavor reminds me of a crisp day after thanksgiving morning with your Irish grandfather who drinks bourbon like it’s his only means of conveyance. Here’s to family gatherings where you would rather drink yourself into a coma instead of partake in awkward family photos and fellowship. CHEERS

Pours inky black with a two finger khaki head with decent lacing. Aroma is or licorice, roasted malts, anise, currants, toffee, espresso, bakers coco, and a little booze. Taste is roasted malts, licorice, molasses, currants, mocha, toffee, anise, and a little booze. Has a medium full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a semi bitter, slightly boozy, long finish. Overall, a pretty nice imp stout that has some nice complex flavors going on, but could be better it had less boozy notes.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Wonderful. Big bold taste. Large notes of coffee, cocoa, and sweet molasses. This stout pours a dark ruby red and quickly builds to a think light brown head that creates considerable lacing.

On tap at The Red Hot. Jet black. Scent if molasses, booze and chocolate. Alcohol is covered well. A little burn with the finish. Great beer!
