crzybob77 (528), Richmond, Virginia, USA Oct 31, 2006 Big flavor with a great malts sharpened by loads of alcohol. This is definitly a good beer. HopBackDoc (393), Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 29, 2006 One of the best looking beers I have seen. Red/copper/amber colorwith very thin head. Malty, earthy, fruity aroma. The big maltiness reminded me of an Oktoberfest beer, but the alcohol made me think I was drinking a barleywine. The flavor was big -- fruity sweet alcohol with huge malts and a bit of hop bite in the background. Very interesting and intoxicating brew. My bottle listed it as 9.3%ABV. nimbleprop (819), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Oct 28, 2006 Poured a dark amber, colored like a grapefruit with a spotty white head. Malty aroma, fruity and floral as well. Yeasty, grainy flavor initially. Heavy and thick mouthfeel which hints of the heavy alcohol. The finish on this beer is awesome. It’s a little sour at first taste and you’re not sure what to expect. The flavor changes over your palate and is sweet, malty and delicious at the end. I honestly anticipated alot more, it turns out to be just another oktoberfest. stoutchap (297), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 28, 2006 Very nice lager and I’m not a lager fan. Decent yeasty/alcohol nose, poured a gorgeous copper with foamy head. Huge malt and hops combo, with a strong finish. A little watery for such a big beer. Surprised that it’s describedas a lager.
Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 23, 2006 One of the better Oktoberfests that i’ve had. Very malty and some noticeable hops. I’ll tell you what, Avery makes some great beers. Very balanced. xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 22, 2006 Big honeyed german apples and fall foliage, cold earth, sweet malts. reddish amber with diminishing beige head. delicious sweet alkohols, apples big barleys, not too comples though. lightly watery? only vaguely feels imperial at all. a little alcohol hots. Arayaga2 (933), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 21, 2006 Standard coppery colored beer with almost no head. Aroma is excellent... sweet strawberry, and a hint of smoke. Taste is same sweet and delicious with fruit and honey.. $7/22oz kepano (239), Meudon, France Oct 20, 2006 There’s something absurd about an Imperial Oktoberfest, and by that label alone my anticipation of Avery’s craft was of a rather mediocre grade. The crepuscular copper hue transpared perfectly, displaying in full light the ugly claims of filtration, and foaming above in an ephemeral white mousse. Volatile vapors of alcohol appear sharpened upon the nose, followed by fruity tones of pear, lemon, melon and rosé wine. The sweetness of acacia honey soaks the prominent alcohol in a cloying and unpleasant combination. Malts become far more conspicuous in the flavor, blending burnt coffee, bitter caramel and honey to a an equally hot mouthfeel and strong carbonation. Despite the intense aggression this beer invokes on the palate, I found the complexity lacking, yielding nothing more than a bland and painful experience.
