Wombata (74), Kobe, Japan Sep 8, 2009 Aroma: vegetable, barley soup, a little hop resin, caramel malt
Flavor: soft caramel malt, sweet, pungent bitter orange that carries through on the finish, hint of stonefruit (doesn’t develop into full-blown peach or apricot), milk chocolate.
Comment: 2007 purchase; tasted in Sept, 2008. Got better as it warmed up a bit. Tasty malt and hops. Soft and rounded with understated supporting hop bitterness, that grows on the finish. The German hops give it bitterness and a subtle complexity. Not as overly sweet as I had expected (sweetness seeming to be a theme throughout much of the Avery line up). MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Sep 7, 2009 Amber brown and copper in color. Nose of malt, brown sugar, toffee, peanut brittle without the peanuts. Tastes malty, dark sugar, cinnamon, nut meg. Palette decent. Not much hops. Drink this closer to release. This is the previous year’s release. A little metallic on finish. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Sep 7, 2009 Bottle. Dark orange in color with a golden head. Big aroma of malts and caramel. Flavor is really damn sweet - malts and caramel. Alcoholic syrup. Dominated by alcohol and sugar. This doesn’t seem like the best representation of a true Oktoberfest beer. dutch23mp (160), Mount Prospect, Illinois, USA Sep 6, 2009 what a great brew, the pour is great rich head on a good balance of hops and a little on the malty side. A little on the sweet side. The ABV is very well hidden on this gem. llcooldave (309), San Antonio, Texas, USA Sep 3, 2009 Very perfumy aroma. Almost like flowers and citrus. Nice big malty flavor with toffee and spice undertones. Gorgeous brown copper in appearance. Overall a real nice suprise to drink. arrogantb (695), Denver, Colorado, USA Sep 1, 2009 2007 bottle poured up into a weizen glass. Beautiful iron color with bubbles racing to the surface. Smells malty, thick, sweet, nice with a little funky stank. The taste is definitely shocking, bready, sweet, thick stuff. The carbonation tells me I must drink slowly! Remember the 2000 election….hard to swallow bitch. This was so damn low on drinkability I could not finish the bottle.
