The smell of this beer is not all that appealing unless you like the scent of dish water -- that’s what it reminds me of. The color is a nice dark amber color with slight lacing and little head. The beer has a buttery texture and has hints of malt and caramel. I do notice a slight hoppy aftertaste, but nothing that other reviewers are saying. This can be due to my love of high IBU IPAs. Overall it is a good beer and goes well with the fall season. Cavie (1369), Fort Worth, Texas, USA

Slight butter but mostly weak malts. Taste smooths out considerably. Some alcohol on the taste. Interesting but just decent. j12601 (1215), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA

Pours a just clear orange with a medium thick browned beige head. Honey, nice malt and a light spice. Malty, little banana. Nice light bitter finish, without too much graininess, and just a touch of banana. DuffManSW (289), Riverside, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 16, 2009 Bottle ($8) from La Bodega in Riverside.. Pours copper with a off white head... Aroma is very sweet with citrus, spice and alcohol. Couldn’t really pick up that distinct Oktoberfest smell. Flavor is kinda weird with some spiciness and just this long lingering metallic note.. A tad on the thick side for me... I love Avery’s idea of making a imperial but this one just didn’t pan out for me.. It just seems like the more I drink the less I like this one. sridleyGTR (23), Golden, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 13, 2009 22 oz 2009 offering in Dogfish Head shaped pint. Burnt orange with light carbonation, nice clarity, and a thin off-white head that leaves light lacing. Bready and iced tea aromas. Palate is fizzy with a sticky finish. Characteristically malty flavor with a sweet aftertaste. Minimal hints of spices and sour fruit. A mild hop bitterness and light alcohol burn show up as it warms. A nice Oktoberfest that hides its ABV well in both the nose and flavor. I look forward to this every year. jmm635 (254), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Sep 12, 2009 Clear, deep amber color with a creamy bright white head. Rich, malty aroma with some sweet citrus notes and a typical Oktoberfest spicyness. Flavor starts out really hoppy, which was a tad unexpected, then fades to a lingering malty aftertaste. Extremely soft on the palate. I really liked the "American" touches on this typical German style. drfabulous (1231), Columbia, Missouri, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Sep 8, 2009 Aroma: vegetable, barley soup, a little hop resin, caramel malt
Flavor: soft caramel malt, sweet, pungent bitter orange that carries through on the finish, hint of stonefruit (doesn’t develop into full-blown peach or apricot), milk chocolate.
Comment: 2007 purchase; tasted in Sept, 2008. Got better as it warmed up a bit. Tasty malt and hops. Soft and rounded with understated supporting hop bitterness, that grows on the finish. The German hops give it bitterness and a subtle complexity. Not as overly sweet as I had expected (sweetness seeming to be a theme throughout much of the Avery line up).
