Clear dark amber, thin tan head. The big malt flavor along with the alcohol just explodes and expands in your mouth. Herbal aftertaste, which at first I wasn’t crazy about but blended nicely as it warmed. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA

That being said, the beer itself was a nice burnt sunset color and had a solid caramel spice thing goin in the aroma. I got caramel cooked up with some roasted brown sugar in the body mainly, and it was damn fine. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 17, 2006 West coast hoppy nose, some malt, deep orange, small custard head. Taste has a big hops start, a fine malt backbone. Full bodied, quite bitter, in fact the hoppiest of the style I’ve tried. Extremely good beer, yet it doesn’t suit the style? Thanks very much mds. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 8, 2006 I believe this was a 2005 bottle. Pours a crystal clear amber- almost like a new shiny copper kettle. Thin and lasting head- some lace. Aroma is sticky sweet with lots of light munich, melanoiden, and light crystal malts- very low on the herbal hops- almost none in fact- jsut pure malty sweetness. Flavor is much the same with mostly malt, and a touch of hop bitterness in the end to keep from getting cloying. I actually expected this beer to be very malty sweet and cloying- thus I wouldnt like it, but turns out I did like this stuff quite a bit and am glad I saved a bottle to age for a bit. This should be nice in another year. Very much like a malty sweet barleywine as others have noted. scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 13, 2004 Deep amberish chestnut, creamy off white head. Aromas slowly emerged as it warmed with hints of sweet malts, fresh spiced chocolate and cherry bread, with some light herbal grassy qualities to note. Malty bready flavors get balanced out by the spicy hop kick on the backside. Full bodied, syrupy, prickly carbonation, dry spicy hop finish. I think they pulled it off nicely. Keep up the great work. beerslayer (753), New Jersey, USA

I like how the huge amount of malt is spread throughout the beer. It never becomes too much. That is because the aroma has a lot of spciy hops, which also show up a bit in its flavor. There is even some very light berry elements. The body is not too viscous. The finish is the nicest of all: clean and almost cutting. Reminds me a lot of DeGroens Doppelbock. Very good. jeffin7 (610), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 31, 2004 Pours a transparent rusty red with a large head that slowly fades to a solid layer. Aroma is malty, slightly syrupy sweet with a slight but sharp grassy hop kick. Flavor a strong but very smooth and clean maltyness, slight caramel, balanced very well by a spicy, grassy hoppy bitterness. Very tasty but still clean and smooth. The alcohol is well hidden.
