keith0718 (151), Olathe, Kansas, USA Oct 14, 2007 A big, thick, sticky--and extremely sweet--beer. It could use some more hops to balance out the sweetness, in my humble opinion.
Acknud (554), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA Jul 25, 2008 Very amber/orange with a small white head. Aroma of caramel malt, cloves and alcohol. Taste is a nicely balanced sweet malt with a citrus hop. Taverner (417), San Ramon, California, USA Jul 22, 2008 A very chewy Marzen. Sweet, and refreshing. Poured copper with minimal white head. The nose in the pour was fruity notes and caramel. Flavor was dominated by malts - and a light bitter note in the back somewhere. badbeer (391), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 Review from 2006. Bottled in 2005. Grabbed the wrong year, but I was cool with that considering the ABV.
Dark amber color with an off-white head with decent lacing. Smell was malty, plenty of caramel. Very nice and sweet flavor, seemed much more like a doppelbock, but it was very good nonetheless. Plenty of caramel in the taste, other sweet malts come into play as well. Mouthfeel was heavier than medium bodied, with medium carbonation. Overall, even though it was a year old, it was still very good. I’d buy this again for sure.
PhillyBeer2112 (1815), Orange Park, Florida, USA Jul 1, 2008 Neat, almost pure amber-orange color, with a medium fizzy head. Heavy caramelized malts up front on the nose, also very bready, moreso than any marzen I’ve ever sniffed. Huge heavy caramel malts, sweet, cloying, massive wet sweet finish. Very heavy palate, the least refreshing and drinkable marzen ever! Needs a heavy sharp cheese to counterbalance or something. Ugh. Rising peppery hop bitterness but there’s no semblance of balance. Lingering heat from the alcohol. Guinness4Duff (429), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Jun 27, 2008 Bottle. Nice copper pour with a healthy white head. Strong caramel aroma with some light fruit notes, flavor is more of the same. Caramel up front with tart apples and melons leading the way to a mild bitter finish. Very good.
