The Kaiser once said, "Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world." If the Kaiser and his significant other had tipped this bottle, we'd all be "sprechenden Deutsch!" We took all that is good in a traditional Oktoberfest - gorgeous, deep copper sheen, massive malty backbone and spicy, floral, pungent noble hops - then intensified each into this, an Imperial Oktoberfest.

Pours a very nice copper, with an undying off-white head. The aroma is fruity, sweet and pungent with a little bit of spice/floral complexity in the background. The flavor really caught me off guard at first, but the more I drink the more I like it. Very sweet and malty at first, then transitions into a bizarre, but increasingly pleasant fruit flavor, and then finishes with a nice lingering floral/almond bitterness. The palate is thick, oily and quite smooth. The alcohol is very nicely hidden in there. A challenging, but ultimately enjoyable brew.

Neat, almost pure amber-orange color, with a medium fizzy head. Heavy caramelized malts up front on the nose, also very bready, moreso than any marzen I’ve ever sniffed. Huge heavy caramel malts, sweet, cloying, massive wet sweet finish. Very heavy palate, the least refreshing and drinkable marzen ever! Needs a heavy sharp cheese to counterbalance or something. Ugh. Rising peppery hop bitterness but there’s no semblance of balance. Lingering heat from the alcohol.

Bottle. Nice copper pour with a healthy white head. Strong caramel aroma with some light fruit notes, flavor is more of the same. Caramel up front with tart apples and melons leading the way to a mild bitter finish. Very good.

Bottle as shown. Pours a copper amber color with a large frothy off white head that lasts. The aroma is a pungent sweet caramel and light malt with fruit. Good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is a very rich malt with brown sugar and caramel. Leaves a very sweet aftertaste. A good Marzen from Avery.

22 oz. Bottle (Vintage 2007) - Pours a golden ruby/amberish with nice off-white head. Aroma is very malty, and smells of sweetness, bread, honey, caramel, and slight hops. Taste very malty, caramel, honey, bready, and damn is it sweet Hop bite on the end Really interesting, I’ll buy another bottle to age for a while, but I still can’t believe it’s so sweet for being about a year old.

2007 Bottle - Pours reddish / dark amber with a soapy beige head. The aroma has sweet bready caramel and toffee, syrup, sugar, green onions and plasticy funk. It is full, rich and a bit odd. Medium / thick body with very subdued carbonation. The flavor starts with lots of spice, slick overly-sweet caramel, sugar, corn aspects and it is sweet, not a little sweet, but VERY sweet. The finish is predictably overly sweet, alcoholic and spicy. There is some merit to this beer, but it is insanely difficult for me to drink.
